Swim Instructor

Description This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Instructs swimming lessonsin accordance withYMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and asappropriate refersstudents and parents to other programs. Maintains records asrequired(i.e.attendance, progress reports, etc.). Attends staff meetings andtrainingsas scheduled. Followsall YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accidentreportsas necessary. Organizes and puts awayneededclass equipment. Reports damaged equipment. Reports to duty 10 minutes beforeshiftand secures a substitute if necessary and with proper notification. Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to instruct andobserveparticipants in proper stroke techniques. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness. Visual acuity isrequiredto see and observe all sections of assigned zone or area of responsibility. Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface. Ability to respond properly to medicalemergencyis necessary. Ability to sit and stand forlong periodsat a timearerequired, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary. Ability to respond properly to medicalemergencyis necessary. Job requires high levels of alertness and concentration.
