Primary responsibilities of police officers include, but are not limited to:
- Performs law enforcement, crime prevention, security and related public safety functions within state controlled property.
- To protect life, property and enforce the rules and regulations of University of Mary Washington as well as the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia in such a manner which supports the mission of the University.
- Provide a safe environment which is conducive to the education of, and promotes harmony for, all members of the University community.
- Knowledge of and experience in the principles and techniques of law enforcement, security, crime detection and prevention, as well as criminal investigation.
- Proficiency with and experience in the use of police equipment relevant to the job; to include the use of carried weapons.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing, with diverse groups of employees, students and members of the general public.
- Ability to interpret laws, polices, and regulations governing the operation of the institution.
- Ability to interpret laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America.
- Experience in Law Enforcement or a related field.
- Graduation from a high school or equivalency.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License to operate a University/state owned or leased vehicle.
- Mandatory certification by the Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Law Enforcement Officer.
