Underwriter, Small Market Management Liability - E&S/Specialty (E-Risk Services: Rockaway, NJ)

Job Description Nationwide’s Property and Casualty team is looking for an Underwriter to start with Experience & Occupation (E&O) renewals and grow into new business submissions. The role is located in Rockaway, New Jersey with a hybrid schedule of three days in the office at E‑Risk Services and two days remote per week. Overview This position works under technical direction to assess a company's risk profile and determine the appropriate pricing, coverage, terms and conditions by analyzing financial statements, operations, management, industry, regulatory environment, and other relevant information. The Underwriter will achieve production and loss ratio goals within the assigned territory, review and analyze claims, loss history and take appropriate action on individual accounts, and independently develop recommendations based on financial analysis. Key Responsibilities Analyze and review applications, financial statements, management, prospects, industry outlook, legal structure, and litigation. Determine suitable insurance programs, including attachment points, terms, conditions, pricing, or decline/ non‑renewal of coverage. Service existing and/or new accounts with quotes, binders, policy issuance, and endorsements. Achieve production and loss ratio goals by analyzing premium and loss results for the assigned territory. Promote company products and programs and maintain relationships with brokers to generate profitable premium dollars. Monitor industry trends to stay informed about new products, distribution systems, and competitor offerings. Accompany other underwriters to broker offices for marketing visits and meet brokers to market services. Participate in underwriting meetings with brokers, clients and other underwriters as needed. Perform other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Undergraduate education with a focus in finance, accounting, economics, or risk management; degree preferred. One or more years of experience as a D&O, EPL and/or E&O underwriter preferred; prior business or finance experience helpful. General knowledge of underwriting policies, practices and procedures, insurance law, and marketing principles. Strong knowledge of financial statements, financial analysis, investments, and market conditions. Effective communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written. Ability to analyze insurance risks and determine acceptability including policy language, rating plans, reinsurance, and other methodologies. Proficiency with job‑related computer software. Capacity to devise business solutions, implement them, and monitor effectiveness. Ability to make decisions with appropriate supervision. Job Conditions Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt). Working Conditions: Normal office environment with occasional local and overnight travel for client meetings as needed. Compensation National salary range for Underwriter, Small Market Management Liability - E&S/Specialty: $54,000.00 – $100,500.00. Expected starting salary range: $54,000.00 – $81,000.00.
