Job Description

SISKIYOU OPPORTUNITY CENTER

Executive Director Recruitment Announcement

The Siskiyou Opportunity Center (SOC) is seeking a new Executive Director. SOC is a rural nonprofit with a 56-year history of serving adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in Siskiyou and Shasta Counties in Northern California. The organization provides vocational training and employment opportunities to foster independence, enhance self-esteem, and promote full participation in society. It also offers structured daily activities and independent living skills training in a safe, inclusive environment.

The Center’s main office is in Weed, with additional facilities in Yreka, Mount Shasta, and Redding. SOC employs more than 60 full- and part-time staff members and currently serves about 120 clients. Its total monthly payroll, which includes about 50 client/workers, exceeds $400,000. The organization maintains a fleet of about 45 vehicles and operates on an annual budget of about $6 million. SOC funding sources include contracts with Caltrans for custodial crews at multiple I-5 rest areas in Siskiyou and Shasta counties, as well as a contract with the City of Redding to operate its transfer station. Additionally, SOC derives revenue from CalRecycle through the Mount Shasta recycling facility. The Lanterman Act provides additional funding for adult day programs and Independent Living Skills (ILS) training through the California Department of Developmental Services. The Redding office also provides job placement assistance for the Department of Rehabilitation. For additional information, please watch this short video:

The Executive Director implements the board's policy decisions and oversees all the organization's programs and services. The ED will represent the organization to the public and build and maintain relationships with the IDD community, service providers, funders, relevant government agencies, and local communities.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a unique combination of organizational leadership skills, compassion, and support for a diverse IDD client base.

Extensive direct experience with developmentally disabled individuals is highly preferred, along with a clear understanding of their unique needs. Experience managing a complex organization, ideally in the nonprofit sector, is essential and includes supervising staff, budgeting, risk management, and personnel oversight. The ability to apply business skills effectively to advance the organization’s mission of client service is required.

The Executive Director must have strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills. They should listen carefully to clients, staff, and policymakers and demonstrate transparency when appropriate. The Director should motivate, dignify, and inspire clients and staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. The ideal candidate should also actively participate in the Opportunity Center's daily activities, build relationships with staff and clients, boost morale, and support the organization's culture.

Candidates must demonstrate lifelong learning and educational achievement commensurate with the position’s complexity. A bachelor’s degree or higher in behavioral sciences, special education, public administration, or business/finance is highly desirable.

Compensation is negotiable based on experience, with a range of $100,000 to $120,000 annually. Benefits include Dental/Vision and Life insurance, a 403b Tax Sheltered Annuity plan (matching up to 3% after 6 months of employment), paid holidays, sick and vacation accruals. This position is exempt from payment of overtime wages as provided in the Fair Labor Standards Act as it applies to Executive and Administrative Employees

Siskiyou Opportunity Center is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on job-related qualifications, experience, organizational needs, and other legitimate business considerations without unlawful discrimination based on any characteristic protected by applicable federal, California, or local law. SOC is committed to providing a professional workplace that values dignity, respect, opportunity, and inclusion.

Siskiyou Opportunity Center will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with the California Fair Chance Act. Applicants are not required to disclose conviction history before a conditional offer of employment except as otherwise permitted or required by applicable law.

If you are an experienced leader who believes strong organizations are built through mission, people, accountability, financial stewardship, and community partnership , we invite you to consider joining Siskiyou Opportunity Center as our next Executive Director.
