Position Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to perform or oversee resident performance of personal care or assist residents to perform personal care, in accordance with Facility policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Policies and Procedures

• Maintain confidentiality of residents, resident family members, coworkers, and Immanuel Living
• Understand and support the philosophy, policies, and standards of Immanuel Living and the Nursing Services Department
• Maintain quality of resident care, including compliance with Facility and Nursing Services Department policies and procedures, and State and Federal guidelines
• Follow facility and department policies and procedures

Resident Care

• Accurately and safely perform resident care in accordance with residents’ care plan, resident Assignment Sheet and worksheets, and nurses’ instructions
• Answer call lights in a timely manner
• Pick up and maintain resident rooms in a neat and orderly condition
• Assist residents to and from meals, meetings, and activities, as needed
• Straighten and maintain department rooms and equipment storage areas in a neat and orderly condition

Documentation and Communication

• Accurately record resident care on Resident Assignment Sheet
• Inform nurses of improvement or decline in resident condition on a timely basis
• At the end of assigned shift, give report to the incoming shift
• Charge out billable supplies
• Answer Unit telephone when nurse is unavailable
• Communicate with supervisor and participate in training and/or meetings that help facilitate departmental communication process
• Communicate with others in a considerate manner

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Straighten and maintain Nourishment Room, Soiled Linen Room, bathing areas, Clean Linen Room, and Unit equipment storage areas in neat and orderly condition
• Function effectively as a team member; assist other team members with concern and direct them to the appropriate resource
• Maintain good working relationships among staff
• Maintain understanding, patience, and tact in dealing with residents, resident families, and coworkers
• Ensure maintenance of a safe living and working environment for residents and staff
• Maintain regular work attendance and follow established work schedule. Hours and days of the week must be flexible to meet scheduling requirements.

Language

• Read, write, and speak basic English sentences
• Read, write, and understand CNA medical terminology
• Read and comprehend basic instructions and present information to others
• Read, interpret, and write routine reports and correspondence

Mathematical

• Basic counting skills
• Add, subtract, multiply, and divide simple numbers

• Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Computer Skills

• Basic to intermediate computer skills

Specialized Office Equipment

• Operate fax machine to send or receive documents
• Operate copier to copy and collate documents
• Operate multi-line phone to place and receive or transfer calls

Specialized Department Equipment

Operate department lifts in accordance with training, facility policy, and applicable law. Employees under age 18 may assist with power-driven patient/resident lifting devices only within the limitations permitted by applicable child labor requirements.

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

• Effectively work and communicate with a wide range of individuals from all socio-economic groups, including senior adult residents and people with special needs, as well as family members
• Read, interpret, and implement documents, such as governmental regulations, rules, and procedure manuals
• Work with minimal supervision and effectively manage workflow
• Make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
• Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints from residents and/or employees
• Understand and follow both written and verbal instructions

Professional Licenses or Certifications Required by Law, Rule, or Regulation for Performing this Position

• Current Montana Certified Nurses Assistant certification
• Completed Montana CNA Skills Checklist
• Completion of six month and annual CNA Skills Evaluation
• Completion of 24 continuing education credits in 2-year period of certification

Essential Physical, mental, and Emotional Requirements

Employees under age 18 are subject to applicable federal and state child labor restrictions. Qualified 16- and 17-year-old CNAs may assist in the operation of power-driven patient/resident lifting devices only as the junior member of a trained team led by an employee who is at least 18 years of age, and may not independently operate the lift. The employee must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and be able to work under time and/or deadline pressures.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand at least 90% of the shift; use hands to finger; handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, bend, squat, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.

The employee must frequently lift up to 10 pounds, rarely lift up to 20 pounds, occasionally lift up to 40 pounds, but rarely lift more than 40 pounds.

The employee must occasionally reach above shoulder height, frequently reach from chest to shoulder, frequently reach from waist to chest, and frequently reach below waist level.

The employee must occasionally carry up to 12 pounds but rarely carry up to 20 pounds.

The employee must frequently push / pull up to 20 pounds, and frequently push up to 40 pounds but rarely push over 40 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required of this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school or GED preferred.
• With current Montana CNA certification, must be in good standing to work as a CNA in Montana OR
• Have a current CNA certification in another state AND be in the process of acquiring Montana certification within 30 days of transferring OR
• Have successfully completed CNA certification training class and be waiting for a certification letter from the Montana Licensure Bureau.

Supervision

This position reports to any nurse and the Charge/Medication Nurse and operates under the Director of Nursing or RN/LPN Unit Resident Care Manager.

This position interacts with managers, Nursing Services staff and other departmental staff, residents, and resident designees, to promote resident care.

The employee is authorized to make decisions as to the timing and sequence of work and the work is performed according to established policies and procedures and/or within applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing the tasks being performed.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Decisions, final recommendations, and/or errors primarily affect other employees in the work unit/department that this position is assigned to but may on occasion affect all employees of the Communities.

Judgment Required in Decision-making

Job duties typically involve frequently changing conditions and problems, requiring considerable judgment in applying factual background and fundamental principles to the development of approaches and techniques for the solution of problems.

Exception Authority

This position cannot authorize exceptions to corporate policy or procedure.

In an effective manner, this position maintains daily contact and interaction with the public, residents and resident family members, and coworkers.

This position interacts with department managers and administrators on a daily basis.

Working Conditions

This position works in a temperature-controlled facility environment.

This position is exposed, on a weekly or more frequent basis, to the following: biological fluids (including but not limited to, vomit, urine and feces), blood borne pathogens, upset and/or angry residents and/or family members, risk of cuts, burns, shock, or other minor injuries (not requiring hospitalization); unpleasant substances, odors, or noises.
