Job Summary

Position is responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled carpentry tasks to repair and/or improve ACPS Facilities and equipment.

• Troubleshot, repaired, and replaced commercial and industrial door hardware and restroom accessories.
• Makes repairs to various types of roofs, including shingle, standing seam, EPDM, and modified bitumen, and associated metal components.
• Makes repairs and adjustments to all types of exterior windows.
• Makes repairs to various interior finishes, including VCT and ceramic tile, hardwood flooring, vinyl base, drywall systems, masonry, concrete, and acoustic tile systems.
• Constructs concrete forms, places, and finishes ready-mixed concrete for a variety of structures, including sidewalks, curbs, grade beams, strips, and spread footers.
• Operates various woodworking equipment, including table saws, band saws, planers, radial arm saws, and drill presses.
• Reads and interprets architectural and engineering drawings and sketches to determine existing conditions and configurations.
• Repairs existing office furniture and equipment.
• Assembles, inspects, and maintains playground equipment and chain link fencing.
• Maintains daily records of work performed and materials used.
• Accurately estimates and orders required project materials.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License with a good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology of the carpentry trade.
• Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to estimate time and materials needed.
• Ability to operate common woodworking machinery.
• Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations associated with carpentry work.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to manipulate power tools and instruments; see and read equipment indications and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift to 50 pounds; and to bend, stoop, kneel, sit on the floor, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, walk, and reach overhead. Must have the ability to work from elevated equipment, including ladders and scaffolding, and in confined spaces.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are normally performed in a school or outdoor environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
