The work you will do:

• Equipment Operator - District Four/Director of Operations/District Maintenance/West Palm Maintenance/Field Support
• This position will operate vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
• This position uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.

Annual salary range: $38,567.34 - $49,910.67. A competitive area differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.

Your specific responsibilities:

• Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
• Cleans and washes equipment.
• After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
• Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
• Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
• Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
• Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
• Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge of mathematical calculations
• Standard safety rules and procedures
• Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools
• Operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles
• Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment
• Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms
• Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures
• Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
• Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds
• Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis
• Work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic
• Work independently
• Stand for an extended period of time

Other job-related requirements:

• Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary.
• A Class E Driver's License is required at time of hire.
• A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B License with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
• Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.

Minimum qualifications:

• Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
• A Class E Driver's License is required at time of hire.
• A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B License with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
• This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy.
