Job Summary Under the general direction of the Clinical Director or Clinical Nurse Manager and in accordance with standards of care and practice established by the Nursing Organization, the specific department, the rules, regulations and/or standards established by the State Board of Nursing, the Joint Commission, Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and appropriate specialty organizations relevant to the patient population under care, the incumbent performs the following functions as a Certified First Assistant (CFA). Responsibilities Assists in moving and positioning patients for surgery. Assists the surgeon in draping the patient. Retracts tissue and exposes the operating field area during the operative procedure. Clamps and ties vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry. Keeps the operative site dry. Affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation. Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the moves of the surgeon. Assists in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performs any and all tasks required of the surgeon incident to the particular procedure. Practices correct operating room etiquette. Complies with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant. Applies principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully. Recognizes potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiates preventive or corrective measures in a timely manner. Performs proficiently and calmly in all emergencies. Works effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team. Thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case. Qualifications Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS or equivalent). Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
