NSC Technologies is looking for a skilled Carpenter with at least 2 years of experience to join our team at Norfolk, VA. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to significant ship repair, construction, and modernization projects. Position Overview:
As a Carpenter / Shipyard Worker, you will play a vital role in constructing, installing, repairing, and fabricating wooden structures to protect ships' equipment. You will assist with outfitting drydocks, constructing blocking arrangements, and building shipping crates, among other tasks. Your ability to read plans, operate various woodworking tools, and maintain a safe and efficient work environment will be essential to the success of this role.



Key Responsibilities:

• Use and Care of Tools: Operate circular saws, table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, drill press, drill motors, routers, grinders, joiners, and other woodworking equipment.
• Work with Fasteners: Understand and apply various fasteners, including their proper usage and fastening patterns.
• Wood Identification: Identify different types of wood and their appropriate applications.
• Blocking Arrangement Layout: Layout blocking arrangements and construct bilge and keel blocks on the drydock according to plans.
• Forklift Operation: Safely operate forklifts to assist with moving materials and equipment.
• Construct Crates and Cradles: Build shipping crates and cradles for large equipment, such as shafts and rotors, meeting carpenter standards.
• Joiner Work: Install joiner walls and ceiling panels, and interpret manufacturer prints or instructions.
• Measurements & Calculations: Work with both US standard and metric measurements, perform basic math operations, and ensure accuracy in all tasks.
• Workplace Safety: Follow all OSHA guidelines and BAE best safety practices. Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes.
• Work Area Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and safe work environment, especially at the end of each shift.
• Adherence to Policies: Comply with the Company's Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy, ensuring a professional and respectful work environment.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Education: High school diploma or GED, or vocational training.
• Experience: At least 2 years of carpentry experience, preferably in a shipyard or similar industrial setting.
• Skills:
  • Ability to use and maintain woodworking tools.
  • Familiarity with different types of fasteners and their proper application.
  • Knowledge of various types of wood and their use in shipbuilding.
  • Proficiency in layout and construction of blocking arrangements.
  • Forklift operation experience.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and the ability to work in high-risk environments.
• Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs frequently.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, squat, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights above 12 feet.
  • Good balance and coordination for working on uneven surfaces and obstacles.
