What You'll Do:

NOTE: This position may be filled as a W/S Plant Mechanic I, II, or III.

This Performs routine technical and skilled work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plants and pump/lift stations; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

Essential Tasks Mechanic I

  • Assists in the overhaul of water and/or wastewater treatment machinery and equipment;
  • Maintains pump and lift stations, reads meters and gauges, lubricates and performs preventative maintenance;
  • Rebuilds pumps and piping systems, installs new equipment;
  • Replaces valves and instruments;
  • Cleans, services and assists in the overhauls of pumps, motors, and related equipment;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.

Essential Tasks Mechanic II

All of the above, plus:

  • Performs regular preventive maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings and gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, checking packing, temperatures, etc.;
  • Troubleshoots and repairs pumping and treatment equipment;
  • Dismantles and overhauls water and/or wastewater treatment machinery and equipment;
  • Assists in preparing, recording and reporting on plant operation, maintenance, and repair.

Essential Tasks Mechanic III

All of the above, plus:

  • Diagnoses, plans, and directs utility maintenance work;
  • Prepares, records, and reports on plant operation, maintenance, and repair;
  • Takes on a leadership role in the absence of the Lead Mechanic.

Qualifications:

Qualifications of Mechanic I

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or valid license from another state
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city departments, employees, and the public.
  • Must be able to maintain all information in a confidential manner.
  • Must be highly detail oriented and project a professional manner.
  • Must be able to climb step and ladders.

Qualifications of Mechanic II

All of the above plus:

  • Considerable experience doing mechanical work with hand tools and power tools.
  • Experience with centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
  • Experience with belt and gear drives.
  • Experience with valves and piping.

Qualifications of Mechanic III

All of the above, plus:

  • Considerable experience maintaining and repairing equipment used in water and wastewater treatment
  • Ability to work independently to perform troubleshooting and repair from start to finish

Physical Requirements

Note: For safety reasons, this worker cannot wear a beard when wearing a respirator.

Hearing/Speaking –

  • (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word).
  • (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Hearing in both ears must be average of 40 decibels in each of the following frequency ranges: 1000, 2000 and 3000 hz.

Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see surrounding terrain, people, vehicles, buildings, conductors, etc., from a distance. Necessary to see wide span of area while viewing work site during daily routine and emergency situations such as storms. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see and read transformer name plate, files, work orders, detailed construction drawings and wiring connections. Both eyes 20/22 corrected
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same. Essential in maintaining proper safety code clearances. Depth Perception - 4
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span to cover program area while focusing on the job at hand. Must be alert to all that is happening.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly at participants or other people who are located at various distances.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary in determining proper phase connection. Necessary in using National Electrical Color Codes for electrical installations and for all Lift Station, Metering and Conductor tagging and installations.
  • Night Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish between objects at night. Visual acuity to be correctable to 20/40 in either eye.
  • Respiratory - Breathing. Must be able to use respiratory protective equipment such as enclosed facemask. Must have a breathing ability of 60% on the FEV and FVC tests results in order to function properly in underground lift stations.
  • The senses of SIGHT, SMELL, HEARING and TOUCH are Required.
  • Must have physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.

Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:

  • Medium to Heavy Work
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
    • Up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move various objects or equipment.
    • Physical demand requirements include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling heavy items and walking, standing, climbing, crawling, reaching, bending and stooping.
    • There is significant use of arms, hands, legs, feet and back.
  • Types of Physical Demands
    • Reaching, Handling, and Fingering: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All above are requirements of this job. Worker must have manual dexterity in both arms and legs. Musculo-Skeletal System requires flexibility for space maneuverability in underground lift stations. Worker must be able to climb and descend ladders using both hands while carrying tools and protective gloves and equipment. Must be able to use rubber protective gloves while installing small items such as washers, screws and fuses. Must be able to climb ladders and tolerate confined and enclosed spaces.

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisors, other employees or members of the public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner, possibly under emergency conditions; to understand and apply safety requirements; to train and lead others in electrical work tasks. Must work independently so good judgment is essential.
  • Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to the extent of measuring for parts or tools needed for assignment, making note of inventory requirements, and counting parts and supplies upon receipt.

Language Ability

  • Read: Ability to read safety and other manuals, instructions, equipment readings, report information, ordinances, rules, regulations, street names and signs, work orders and other documents relating to the job.
  • Write: Ability to write figures, reports, make notes as needed to complete records and labels.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions and communicate well with supervisor, co-workers, and other City personnel in person, over two-way radio and by telephone; ability to perform proper and clear communication rapidly during emergency situations.

Environmental Conditions

  • The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions : Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather as well as in rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke, wind and lightning storms. This may require the individual to wear the same clothing and continue work for a period of time to exceed the normal work schedule during emergencies. Worker is subject to other conditions such as pollen, creosote and other substances that may cause allergic reaction.
  • Employee may be working in close proximity to sewage.
  • Employee will be exposed to grease, lubricant and petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a utility plant facility. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

  • Service truck, water and wastewater treatment machinery and equipment including chlorinators, chemical feeders, conveyors, pumps, meters, gauges, piping systems, presses, control valves, lights, motors, hand tools, torch, welding equipment
The work location of this job will be 5898 Riverdale Rd Jamestown, North Carolina.
