Genetic Counselor - Physician's Office - Cancer Institute at St. Francis Medical Center

Position Overview The Genetics Counselor is responsible for providing genetic counseling to patients, parents and families. Essential Job Functions Gathers family and medical history and provides counsel to patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects. Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options, obtains informed consent from interested patients. Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations, maintaining appropriate records and ensuring confidentiality. Assists families in understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks. Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate. Coordinates and supports the execution of research protocols, including recruitment, assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records. Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, including special projects, correspondence and program funding activities. Provides patient care/counseling to all patients of childbearing age.
