Position Summary
The Lead Behavior Intervention Specialist will perform all necessary duties of Behavior Intervention Specialist ---The Lead Behavior Intervention Specialist is responsible for oversight of BIS staff members and their assigned clusters. This includes but is not limited to training and mentoring of BIS staff, ensuring that all duties are being performed to satisfactory, ensuring BIS compliance with all agency and department policies and procedures, and completion of performance evaluations. This oversight will be provided to meet both OPWDD and New York State and Federal regulatory requirements regarding the delivery of behavioral services. The Lead BIS may have additional responsibilities of an assigned caseload and participate as an active member of interdisciplinary teams.
Essential Accountabilities
- Participate as an active member of the IDT through the provision of behavioral consultation particularly on individuals with identified or emerging behavioral challenges.
- Participates in meetings including, but not limited to ISP, Day Programs, Departmental, Case Reviews, Special IDT, Consult Reviews, and staff trainings.
- Performs formal and informal assessments including, but not limited to an individual's emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functioning. This may include but is not limited to functional behavioral assessments, clinical assessment of substantial diminution (CASD) for QA investigations, and formal assessment of adaptive functioning
- Complete psychological/behavioral documents including Behavior Support Plans, Monitoring plans, semi-annual and/or annual psychological reports. Update documents in accordance with agency and OPWDD regulations.
- Utilize data to monitor the effectiveness of behavioral interventions.
- In conjunction with the IDT, develop necessary protocols and programming to monitor and reduce maladaptive behaviors including Behavior Supervision Protocols, Environmental Checklists to prevent Pica, and Behavioral Incentive Programs.
- Debriefs with staff and individuals after major crisis or behavioral events and provides supportive counseling to individuals as indicated.
- Provide individualized and group interventions to meet the needs of identified individuals including but not limited to teaching positive replacement behaviors, anger management, coping skills, informal counseling, etc.
- Follow all department and agency wide systems for proper record keeping and documentation of work duties and individuals' progress.
- Train staff on the implementation of behavior support plans/monitoring plans, general approaches to managing challenging behaviors, and other relevant topics as needed.
- Work with the IDT to monitor the individual's psychiatric treatment including consultation with psychiatrists, attendance at psychiatric appointments as needed, analysis and presentation of behavioral data relevant to psychotropic medication outcomes.
- Work with the IDT to ensure that all necessary processes are completed for Human Rights Committee (HRC) presentations in accordance with agency and OPWDD regulations and to ensure that proper informed consent is obtained for all relevant procedures.
- Perform audit reviews of psychological/behavioral documents to ensure reports and documents are present and organized in the appropriate sections of the individuals' records and to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Provide coverage within the Department as needed.
- Participate in various agency committees including but not limited to HRC.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and travel to multiple sites. Caseloads and schedules are subject to change based on individual's need/request.
- Complete and keep updated in all required agency training (e.g., SCIP, CPR, First Aid, Corporate Compliance, etc.).
- Other duties as requested.
Responsible for oversight of BIS staff members and their assigned clusters as indicated below.
- Training and mentoring of BIS staff.
- Ensure BIS compliance with all agency and department policies.
- Ensure implementation of all department procedures and processes.
- Monitoring of BIS to ensure compliance with required deadlines.
- Ensure that BIS performs all required duties.
- Provide coverage as needed when a vacancy arises within the cluster.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback regarding job performance.
- Work collaboratively with BIS to identify strengths, weaknesses, and to set appropriate goals for performance improvement and professional development.
- Conduct quarterly audit reviews to ensure compliance with required deadlines, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct monthly onsite visits and observations of BIS.
Qualifications
Qualifications
At least a (1) master's degree from a program in a clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology, or applied psychology; (2) a national board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a master's degree in behavior analysis or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology; or (3) a New York State license in mental health counseling. Must have (a) documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development; (b) at least five years of experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities, including the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavior support plans; (c) experience providing supervision and training to others in the implementation of behavior support plans. A NYS driver's license and/or access to a vehicle is required.
