This person will bring strong fermentation expertise, along with experience in protein purification and downstream processing, including setting up and running equipment, and will help validate and improve our current manufacturing processes as we continue to scale. How you will add value to 20BLOC The Sr. Process Engineer will play a key role in advancing 20BLOC’s manufacturing capabilities by leading engineering projects that validate and improve the current process, including precision fermentation and associated downstream unit operations. This is a highly hands‑on position for someone with hands on fermentation process knowledge who is comfortable setting up, operating, and troubleshooting equipment in a regulated manufacturing environment. The role works closely with Manufacturing, MSAT, Quality, and Engineering, and may also provide leadership to the engineering team as needed. Key Responsibilities Process Engineering & Improvement Lead engineering projects to improve current manufacturing processes, with a primary focus on fermentation, protein purification, and associated downstream equipment. Provide hands‑on support for fermentation process setup, equipment startup, operation, troubleshooting, and day‑to‑day execution. Partner with cross‑functional teams to run engineering studies, solve process issues, and implement practical improvements to equipment, workflows, and process controls. Drive continuous improvement initiatives that support reliable scale‑up and routine GMP manufacturing. Support equipment commissioning, operational readiness, and process optimization efforts to improve robustness, consistency, and manufacturing efficiency. Cross‑Functional Technical Leadership Serve as a senior technical resource across Manufacturing, MSAT, Engineering, and Quality for fermentation‑related process decisions and troubleshooting. Bring experience from larger pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical organizations to help establish strong engineering practices and execution discipline. Provide leadership and direction to the engineering team when needed, while remaining a hands‑on contributor. Practical Execution & Team Support Operate effectively in a small‑company environment while creating a high bar for technical excellence within the organization. Be comfortable working directly with equipment and on the manufacturing floor to solve problems and support execution. Contribute as an individual expert today, with the capability to grow into broader engineering leadership responsibilities as the organization grows. Education Bachelor’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related technical discipline required. Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a related field preferred. Experience 10–15 years of experience in process engineering, manufacturing support, MSAT, or technical operations within biotech, biopharma, or related regulated environments. Strong background in fermentation and protein purification, including hands‑on experience with upstream and downstream processes and the setup and operation of related equipment. Prior experience in large pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical companies, with exposure to established engineering systems and best practices is preferred. Demonstrated track record of leading engineering projects to improve existing manufacturing processes. Deep technical understanding of fermentation, protein purification, and practical process engineering in a GMP manufacturing environment. Hands‑on, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working directly with equipment to support setup, operation, troubleshooting, and process improvement. Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to translate process observations into effective engineering improvements. Able to balance hands‑on execution with strategic thinking and cross‑functional collaboration. Capable of influencing technical direction and providing informal or formal leadership to engineering teams as needed.
