NON-MANAGEMENT JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Overnight On-Call Shelter Worker, 360 YS Exempt/Non-exempt: NON-EXEMPT Compensation Range: $18 - $20 Essential Functions: Primarily responsible for providing overnight coverage and supervision of shelter operations, ensuring a safe, calm, and supportive environment for all residents during overnight hours. Supervise and monitor evening and overnight shelter activities, maintaining resident safety and enforcing shelter rules, boundaries, and expectations in a respectful and consistent manner. Conduct regular room and wellness checks, responding appropriately to medical, mental health, and emergency situations, including contacting emergency services when necessary. Remain on-call for after-hours shelter-related emergencies and respond promptly to crises or conflicts using trauma-informed and non-violent crisis intervention techniques. Communicate and coordinate with hotel staff regarding any overnight building or facility-related emergencies or concerns. Provide peer support, mentorship, and guidance to residents, utilizing lived experience to foster trust, stability, and positive engagement. Model positive coping skills, appropriate behavior, and respectful interactions to support a healthy living environment. Collaborate with daytime staff and management to ensure effective communication of overnight activities, incidents, and concerns. Maintain accurate records, logs, and incident reports in accordance with shelter policies and procedures. Uphold confidentiality, safety standards, and all organizational policies at all times. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Ability Requirements: Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, including trauma-informed care Ability to respond effectively to medical, mental health, and emergency situations Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build rapport with residents Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in high-stress or crisis situations Knowledge of safety protocols, confidentiality standards, and shelter policies Strong observational skills and attention to detail for monitoring resident well-being Ability to document incidents accurately and maintain organized records Ability to work independently overnight while exercising sound judgment and decision-making Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Personal experience with homelessness and/or shelter residency is preferred. Previous experience in peer support, residential services, or social services is also preferred. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently during overnight shift hours and possess knowledge of trauma-informed care principles. Physical Demands and Other Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties listed in the job description satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Capable of operating standard office equipment, including a computer and keyboard, calculator, typical business machines such as a fax machine and copier. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20-30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to have valid driver’s license, auto insurance and must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. The work environment characteristics include a noise level which is usually low to moderate. Safety and Agency Resource Utilization: Demonstrates sound judgement and foresight in safety awareness and in daily work. Notifies, in a timely manner, the supervisory chain of any incidents or circumstances that need attention. Report all suspicions or allegations of abuse immediately to their supervisor.
