ER/Trauma Director Glen Rose Medical Center–Glen Rose, TX 76043 Job Overview Emergency Room (ER) Director oversees the daily clinical operations, staffing, and strategic direction of a hospital’s emergency department. They ensure high-quality, efficient patient care, manage budgets, maintain regulatory compliance, and lead teams to optimize patient flow in high-pressure environments. Key roles include hiring personnel, implementing policies, and managing emergency. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities. Responsible for personnel, capital and operating budgets, and compliance. Reports to CNO and is a liaison to departments, physicians, administration, patients, guests and the community. Department Director should be visionary as to the opportunities to develop, grow and expand their service line. The following description of duties is intended to outline the essential responsibilities of the person in this position. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of job duties and responsibilities. All functions must be carried out according to Glen Rose Medical Center’s Mission Statement and policies. Essential Functions Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization Oversee the daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training and developing of employees within the department Act as the hospital liaison with all pre-hospital emergency medical services and area Trauma referral centers As the trauma coordinator, organize services and systems necessary for the multidisciplinary approach throughout the continuum of trauma care; assume responsibility for the clinical and financial performance of the Trauma Program Responsible for the ongoing quality/performance improvement processes related to trauma care Facilitates Trauma Committee meetings, ED staff meetings and participates on other committees, task forces as assigned Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all ED and trauma patients Approach others in a tactful manner and treat others with respect and consideration Required to work as a staff nurse at least one shift a week, or more, as needed to ensure staffing coverage of department Follow through on commitments; accepts responsibility for personal actions; and adapt to change Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all patients Support and interpret policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives of the hospital Facilitates staff analysis and improvement plans for ED employee satisfaction workgroup Monitors customer satisfaction scores and implements plans to improve them Monitor patient volumes, quality of care, and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement Maintains a departmental dashboard that includes information and progress on each pillar (People, Service, Quality, Finance, and Leadership) Responsible for investigating patient, physician and staff complaints and concerns (QDC) and works to resolve them Complete annual performance evaluation for self and employees and implement plans of correction when needed Develops and administers a budget; leads cost efficient and effective operations, creates plan of correction for any operating expenses that deviate more than 5% from budget Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members Maintain required competencies for self and all employees within the department Pursue professional growth and participates in a professional organization Non-Essential Functions Perform other duties as assigned Core Responsibilities Operational Leadership: Directs daily ER operations, including patient care standards, workflow efficiency, and staffing models. Staff Management: Hires, trains, evaluates, and coaches nursing and support staff to ensure competency. Quality & Compliance: Ensures compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission), manages risk, and initiates quality improvement projects. Financial Management: Develops and manages operating/capital budgets, oversees equipment procurement, and works on cost-effective improvements. Collaboration: Acts as a liaison between ED staff, administration, and physicians to improve emergency services. Emergency Preparedness: Develops protocols for handling mass casualties and disaster situations. Specific Responsibilities Plan, organize and administer work in the Emergency Room by establishing services, policies and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and standard practices of professional organizations within budget and productivity standards to ensure the continuous, accurate, timely and cost effective services are provided. Interpret organizational and departmental policies for staff, analyze and resolve conflicts and initiate plans to motivate staff and achieve work goals. Assure that all staff is properly trained in and oriented to the work environment and have the necessary equipment and supplies to perform their job to attain high quality results and a cohesive work environment. Ensures staff is competent in use of equipment and/or supplies. Performs analysis to include selection, evaluation, and/or recommendations of equipment and supplies for purchase, lease or rental within budget and/or group purchasing contract agreements to ensure adequate resources are available. Completes appropriate forms for major expenditures for approval. Collaborates with CNO and CFO on purchases. Hires staff, completes annual performance evaluations and conducts individual review sessions semi-annually, coach staff to improve work performance and provide high quality service. Review chart audits results for compliance and department opportunities. Attend appropriate hospital committee meetings, conducts monthly departmental meetings, in-services as needed. Develops physician relations. Collaborates with physician liaison on development of physician relations and implementation of growth strategies. Monitors physician satisfaction and implements action plans to improve identified areas of concern. Participates in Performance Improvement activities. Assures performance improvement programs meet regulatory requirements. Identifies opportunities for improvement and departmental efficiencies. Reviews and educates staff on NPSGs. Ensure staff is compliant with processes. Monitor Core Measure metrics. Ensuring staff are aware of requirements and monitors employee satisfaction and incorporates staff into decision making process. Round on newly admitted patients in the Emergency Department Address patient/family concerns/satisfaction issues. Inform CNO if appropriate. Actively engage in patient satisfaction. Impacts staff recruitment and retention using various motivational strategies. Speaks positively about the organization and demonstrates positive attitude and behavior in the work environment. Is a change agent for hospital/department initiatives Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing with minimum of 5 years experience as a Registered Nurse Experience preferred with management experience. Licensure in the State of Texas as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) Current BCLS/CPR Certification ACLS certification within 6 months of hire TNCC within one year of hire for ER preferred PALS or ENPC within one year for ER preferredPROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
