Job Overview A pipelayer's job is to lay pipes for water mains, drains, and storm or sanitation sewers. Responsibilities Laying pipes – Pipelayers lay pipes on and under the ground using a variety of tools and equipment. Preparing trenches – Pipelayers dig trenches to the required depth, either by hand or with trenching tools. They may also grade or level the trench bases. Positioning pipes – Pipelayers align and position pipes to prepare them for sealing or welding. Sealing joints – Pipelayers use glue, cement, or welding equipment to connect pipe pieces and seal joints. Covering pipes – Pipelayers cover pipes with dirt or other materials. Maintaining pipes – Pipelayers perform continual maintenance on pipes and replace those that need repair. Using instruments – Pipelayers use instruments like lasers, grade rods, or transit levels to install or use them. Operating equipment – Pipelayers operate mechanized equipment like front-end loaders, rollers, tandem dump trucks, pickup trucks, or backhoes. #J-18808-Ljbffr
