Speech and Language Pathologists

The Speech and Language Pathologist is an extension of the Office of Specialized Student Services and reports to the Director of Specialized Student Services in collaboration with the building principal. The school Speech and Language Pathologist carries an active role in providing direct services to students with IEPs. This role serves as an essential member of the assessment team for initial and 3-year multidisciplinary evaluations that address the communication domains. Qualifications

Required Education/Certification

• Valid full Michigan License in Speech-Language Pathology (no limited license), or
• Valid Michigan teacher certificate in the area of Speech/Language Pathology and current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)

Preferred Experience

• Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
• A strong commitment to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, as demonstrated by experience with co-teaching or other collaborative delivery models within an educational setting
• A wealth of instructional strategies to address the speech/language needs of students with various disabilities
• Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction as a tool for student learning and/or communication
• The ability to, independently and accurately implement the requirements of IDEA and Michigan's Special Education Rules on behalf of caseload students
• The ability to participate as an effective team member in differential diagnosis and decision-making
• Knowledge of medical and clinical issues related to individuals with language, learning, and developmental disabilities

Responsibilities & Duties

• Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of programs to improve communication skills
• Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring students suspected of having communication impairments
• Provide a thorough assessment of communication impairments
• Provide screening to identify students in need of referring
• Assist in proper referral of individuals to agencies and specialist in the community
• Provide appropriate individualized program of therapy to meet individualized student IEP goals and objectives
• Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to integrate therapy goals into the students' daily activities
• Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families, when appropriate.
• If case coordinator, schedule and chair these IEPs
• Function as team members for initial referrals, re-determinations of eligibility, IEPs, including maintaining contact with school, family, physicians and agencies
• Complete record keeping including keeping data on student progress for progress reporting
• Complete monthly Medicaid billing (if you have your CCCs) and Random Moment Time Studies (RMTS)
• Participate on advisory committees as appropriate
• Provide and/or participate in professional development
• Participate in professional development opportunities that are aligned with the district and school's mission, vision and goals and compliance
• Be an active member of the school community through, Professional Learning Communities, various building and district committee work, the School Improvement Team and other leadership opportunities as presented
• All other duties as assigned by the director or principal

• Provide emotional and social guidance which is consistent with District expectations and which meets the educational needs of all students
• Communicate with students, parents, administrators and other staff members in a professional manner which is consistent with District and school expectations
• Plan, implement, record data and create reports consistent with District, State and Federal mandates
• Provide supervision which ensures a safe and nurturing work environment
• Manage time, equipment, and materials efficiently and maintain a physical and emotional environment that is well-organized and student centered.
