Job Posting Title: PRN Pre/Post Registered Nurse (RN), Ambulatory Surgery Center Hiring Department: Dell Medical School Position Open To: All Applicants Weekly Scheduled Hours: 8 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Earliest Start Date: Immediately Position Duration: Expected to Continue Location: AUSTIN, TX Purpose The Pre/Post Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating the nursing care provided to the surgical patient during the pre‑admission, pre‑op and post‑op period. Responsibilities Function in pre‑admission, pre‑ and post‑operative nursing capacities in the care of ambulatory surgery patients or be willing to cross‑train to achieve the full capacity of care Demonstrate necessary practical, technical, or specialized skills required for the role of the pre‑ and post‑operative nurse in accordance with standards of practice Plan, implement, and evaluate pre and post‑operative nursing care for patients based on individual, specific patient needs, and according to physician's orders Have a flexible schedule and willingness to report to work on short notice and anticipate schedule fluctuations based on patient length of stay and postoperative needs Have adequate understanding of operative procedures Maintain and demonstrate current skills and knowledge of intravenous therapy, medication administration and effects, patient assessment, airway maintenance, patient education, emotional/social support of patients and families, and other needed clinical competencies Review charts for completeness in accordance with documentation protocols prior to and after the surgical procedure, ensuring relevant information is in the chart prior to the start of procedure Participate in hand‑off communication to ensure continuity of care Participate in the anesthesia time‑out process if performed in the pre‑op area prior to administration of pre‑operative blocks or prior to the induction of anesthesia Be responsible for medication management, including controlled substances, handling biohazardous materials and surgical specimens, maintaining inventory in care areas, and maintaining required logs such as temperature, medical gas levels, etc., and QC of CLIA waived tests Required Qualifications Active Texas RN license Minimum of three years pre‑ or post‑op experience BLS & ACLS Certification upon employment PALS certification within 3 months of hire Flexibility in days and hours available to work Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Nursing CPAN, CAPA, or healthcare quality certification Bilingual in English and Spanish Experience in an ambulatory surgery center Salary Range Flexible Working Conditions Work hours are variable based on patient care needs but are generally Monday‑Friday Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time, walk, bend, stoop and stretch Ability to perform overhead and low reaching activities Requires hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to provide patient care and operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and other office equipment Requires normal range of hearing, eyesight, voice projection to record, prepare, and communicate appropriately Physical strength for equipment needs and patient care activities; may require lifting and moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs Exposure to noisy equipment Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, high stress/pressure, handles emergency or crisis situations, regular interaction with emotional patients and/or family members Work is performed in a patient care setting and may involve exposure to infections, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, radiation/laser, waste gases and blood and body fluids; frequent exposure to water and chemicals used in disinfection/sterilization process Equal Opportunity Employer The University of Texas at Austin, as an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action.
