Software Test Engineer II

Overview At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments referred to as directorates. The Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. The PNNL campus also hosts the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE Office of Science user facility. The National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission‑focused solutions to take on complex, real‑world threats. Within NSD, the AI and Data Analytics Division combines domain expertise with advanced hardware and software to deliver computational solutions for data and analytic challenges, spanning the entire analytics lifecycle. Responsibilities We are seeking a Software Test Engineer for the TestOps team. The role focuses on assuring the quality, reliability, and performance of innovative systems across agency AI platforms, large‑scale data orchestration, and real‑time intelligence processing. Responsibilities include: Design, develop, document, execute, and debug test strategies for new and existing software systems, applications, and hardware/software interfaces. Develop test plans, test cases, and acceptance criteria, ensuring functional, integration, system, regression, and performance coverage. Build and maintain automated and manual test solutions across API, UI, integration, end‑to‑end, and regression layers. Implement automated tests using Cypress.io, Playwright, or similar frameworks; integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab or GitHub. Validate end‑to‑end workflows and integrations across APIs, databases, pipelines, and services using SQL and/or GraphQL. Validate AI models, data, and workflows using data/model validation, integration, E2E, and regression testing, accounting for non‑deterministic outputs. Assess AI quality attributes such as accuracy, precision/recall, relevance, bias/fairness, robustness, and guardrails or safety expectations. Validate data quality signals including completeness, correctness, representativeness, drift, and label quality. Apply cloud and container concepts, use observability tools, and support reliability testing for mission‑critical services. Collaborate with stakeholders, develop test tools and processes, and perform continuous improvement. National Interest Project Examples: Detect and prevent smuggling of drugs and contraband at ports of entry. Develop large data pipelines to thwart funding for terrorists, nuclear proliferators, drug cartels, and rogue leaders. Apply big data solutions to national security problems. Apply image classification for nuclear forensics analysis. Develop capabilities for scalable geospatial analytics. This position is based in Richland, WA or Seattle, WA and requires an onsite presence Monday through Thursday, with Friday as required by business needs. Security Clearance The role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance (Q/SCI). Applicants will undergo a background investigation and must meet eligibility for classified access under 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. Testing Designated Position Selected candidates will be subject to pre‑employment and random drug testing for illegal substances, consistent with federal regulations. BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Experience implementing automated tests using Cypress.io, Playwright, or similar frameworks. Experience using AI‑assisted development tools within an IDE (e.g., VS Code). Programming experience in JavaScript and Python. Knowledge of SQL or GraphQL. Experience developing software test plans, test cases, and reports. Knowledge of software engineering best practices and development lifecycles. Experience with DevOps/MLOps, including CI/CD processes (GitLab or GitHub). Experience with AI tools (e.g., Claude, Co‑Pilot) within an IDE. Familiarity with AI models, MCP servers, AI skills, and AI agents. Experience validating models, data, and integrations with E2E and regression testing, handling non‑deterministic outputs. Experience assessing AI quality attributes, data quality, safety, guardrails, and performance. Experience with AWS/Azure cloud computing.
