Assistant Video Editor

The Assistant Video Editor is responsible for editing and producing video content for Digital Impact & clients, including elected officials, advocacy organizations, corporations, and campaigns. This role focuses on post-production—editing long-form and short-form content, color grading, motion graphics, and producing platform-optimized cuts for YouTube, TikTok, and Meta platforms. The position supports social media content efforts by writing copy and captions under creative direction and staying current on platform trends. Who We Are Digital Impact & is a strategic communications firm headquartered in downtown San Diego. We operate DIA Live Studio, a professional video production facility where we create content for elected officials, advocacy organizations, corporations, and campaigns. Assemble and edit video content from raw footage under creative direction. Produce social media cuts, shorts, and clips for YouTube, TikTok, and Meta platforms. Add basic graphics, text, titles, and lower thirds to videos. Perform sound syncing and basic audio adjustments. Apply basic color correction as needed. Review and verify cuts are clean and error-free before delivery. Ensure all content aligns with brand guidelines and campaign objectives. Maintain and organize project files according to internal file structures, storage systems, and naming guidelines. Write social media copy, captions, and messaging under creative direction. Generate original content ideas and concepts for social media campaigns. Monitor social media trends, analytics, and performance metrics to inform content strategy. Identify opportunities to grow and engage client communities on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Meta platforms. Support studio shoots as needed, including occasional camera operation and production assistance. Coordinate with team members to ensure project deliverables are met on time. Stay current on video editing techniques, social media trends, and platform best practices. Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned by management. Competencies Basic to intermediate proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro. Ability to work quickly and accurately under direction. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Familiarity with social media platforms and content formats. Willingness to learn and grow skills. Reliable and able to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Supervisory Responsibility This position does not currently have any direct supervisory responsibilities but may serve as a coach and mentor for junior team members or interns. Work Environment This job operates in a professional studio environment and on-location at client sites. The role routinely uses camera equipment, lighting equipment, audio equipment, studio production infrastructure, and computer equipment for editing. Remote work for editing, post-production tasks, and social media management is available for employees with their own editing setup; all gear and technology is provided at the studio. Physical Demands The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of up to 4 hours during productions and shoots. The role may require bending, kneeling, or crouching to set up equipment. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a part-time contract position, approximately 25+ hours per week, with the opportunity to transition to full-time as work increases. This is a hybrid position with in-person work required for studio shoots and on-location productions. Remote work is available for editing and post-production when studio or shoot time is not required. Typical working hours are flexible, but evening and weekend work is required to meet client needs and deliverables. The use of personal transportation is required. Travel Travel to client offices and on-location shoots in San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles is required. Additional travel outside of these regions may be required as needed. Required Education and Experience 1-3 years of video editing experience. Basic to intermediate proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro. Ability to assemble footage, make basic cuts, and organize timelines. Experience creating content optimized for YouTube, TikTok, and Meta platforms. Familiarity with social media platforms and content best practices. Understanding of what makes content perform on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Preferred Education and Experience Degree or coursework in Film, Communications, Media Production, or related field. Experience with DaVinci Resolve for editing or color grading. Portfolio showing social media content you have edited. Background working with political campaigns, advocacy organizations, or corporate communications. Compensation Hourly Rate: $20-25/hr, based on experience (25+ hours/week) This position has the opportunity to grow into full-time employment as workload increases.
