Instructional Designer

The Instructional Designer is responsible for designing, developing, and continuously improving training programs that support Indiana Electric Cooperatives and its member electric cooperatives. Working collaboratively with internal subject matter experts and cooperative professionals, this position transforms technical and regulatory content into engaging classroom, virtual, and self-paced learning experiences. The position plays a key role in modernizing IEC's learning portfolio by incorporating adult learning principles, instructional design best practices, and technology-enabled learning while ensuring training reflects industry standards, regulatory requirements, and cooperative best practices. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Instructional Design Design engaging instructor-led, virtual, and eLearning courses. Convert existing classroom training into virtual and blended learning formats. Develop participant guides, facilitator guides, job aids, videos, and digital learning resources. Apply adult learning principles to improve learner engagement and knowledge retention. Build learning assessments and evaluate course effectiveness. Recommend innovative instructional technologies and learning tools. Training Development Partner with IEC staff and member cooperative subject matter experts to identify training needs. Develop new training programs based on industry trends and cooperative best practices. Update existing curriculum to reflect regulatory changes and operational improvements. Standardize course materials across training programs. Assist with learning management system administration and content organization. Technical & Safety Training Support Assist in developing safety and regulatory curriculum. Translate complex technical, regulatory, and compliance requirements into clear, understandable, and engaging learning content tailored to the needs of the intended audience. Support training related to OSHA, DOT, utility operations, and workplace safety. Coordinate with safety professionals to ensure technical accuracy. Deliver classroom or virtual instruction as assigned. Evaluate participant feedback and recommend curriculum improvements. Project Management Manage multiple curriculum development projects simultaneously. Coordinate timelines with subject matter experts. Maintain training documentation and version control. Support strategic initiatives to expand IEC educational offerings. OTHER FUNCTIONS Attend trainings, conferences, and professional development activities to remain current on industry standards and maintain certifications. Perform other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Adult Education, Education, Organizational Development, Training and Development, Communications, or related field. At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience designing and developing adult learning programs. Experience designing instructor‑led, virtual instructor‑led (VILT), blended, and self‑paced eLearning programs. Knowledge of adult learning and instructional design principles, with a natural curiosity for new and better ways to help people learn. Experience consulting with subject matter experts to analyze training needs and translate technical information into effective learning solutions. Experience developing curriculum, facilitator guides, participant materials, assessments, job aids, and other instructional resources. Experience using instructional design and multimedia development tools to create digital learning content. Experience with learning management systems (LMS) and evaluating learning effectiveness through assessments and learner feedback. Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines. Experience supporting technical, safety, utility, manufacturing, construction, industrial, or regulatory training environments is strongly preferred. Familiarity with OSHA regulations, utility safety practices, or other technical training disciplines is preferred. Professional certifications related to instructional design, adult learning, project management, or safety training are desirable. Valid driver's license with the ability to occasionally travel throughout Indiana. Demonstrated ability to analyze training needs and develop creative, learner‑centered instructional solutions for diverse audiences. Ability to translate complex technical, regulatory, or operational information into clear, engaging, and effective training materials. Strong facilitation and presentation skills, with the ability to engage learners in classroom, virtual, and blended learning environments. Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate cross‑functional projects, and consistently meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal staff, member cooperative employees, subject matter experts, vendors, and external partners. Exceptional written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including technical writing and instructional content development. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to evaluate learning outcomes and recommend continuous improvements. Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as a member of a collaborative team. Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams), learning management systems, virtual meeting platforms, and common instructional technology tools. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, survey platforms, video editing, and eLearning authoring software (such as Articulate 360 or Adobe Captivate) is preferred. Ability to travel throughout Indiana to support training programs, meetings, and member cooperative initiatives. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented office environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to sit for periods of time and to move intermittently throughout the workday within or between departments or facilities. Strong sensory skills, such as good hearing, dexterity and good eyesight, including the use of color perception. Ability to interact frequently with others through phone, e‑mail and written correspondence. Ability to speak clearly.
