Senior Therapeutic Inclusion Specialist (15024, Grade 22)

Position Overview The Maryland‑National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, is hiring an Adapted Aquatics and Fitness Program Specialist to provide programmatic and supervisory support to the Special Programs Division and Therapeutic Recreation programs throughout the county. The position is based primarily at Southern Area Aquatics and Recreation Complex with the division office in Largo, Maryland. Responsibilities Plan, implement, and supervise programs for individuals with disabilities focusing on adapted aquatics, adapted sports, veterans, and fitness programs. Assess participants’ complex needs and provide accommodations and program adaptations based on assessments. Provide ongoing support to program participants, families, and staff through regular visits, communications, and newsletters. Develop behavior management plans and provide staff training. Recruit, select, train, and supervise program staff, conduct background checks, plan work schedules, evaluate performance, and counsel employees. Coordinate marketing strategies, promote programs through articles, releases, flyers, websites, and presentations, maintain mailing lists, and manage budget projections, revenues, and expenditures. Act as liaison to other agency personnel, review policies, and serve on committees to ensure equal access and enjoyment for individuals with disabilities. Coordinate with community agencies and facilities, initiate formal agreements, meet with citizens and government agencies, identify needs, plan programs, and address complaints. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, or a related field. Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in therapeutic recreation or closely related experience (or equivalent combination totaling six (6) years). Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred. Valid and unrestricted driver’s license; licensing requirements must meet Commission rules. Valid certifications required for safety and instruction: ARC Lifeguard Instructor, ARC Water Safety Instructor, ACE Fitness Instructor and/or Pool Operator’s License; maintenance of Lifeguarding and Certified Pool Operators (CPO) License. Successful completion of a Commission medical examination. Preferred Qualifications Certifications in ARC Lifeguarding, ARC Water Safety Instruction, ACE Fitness Instructor and/or Pool Operator’s License (or ability to obtain within six months of employment). Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating adapted aquatics and fitness programs for individuals with disabilities. Expertise in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and familiarity with 2010 Standards for Accessible Design related to program accommodations and swimming pools. Essential Worker Characteristics In-depth knowledge of therapeutic recreation, disabilities, ADA, recreation and leisure activities, supervision, behavior management, assessment tools, Commission policies, equal employment opportunity, safety regulations, first aid/CPR, advocacy organizations, office practices, public relations, marketing, and time management. Analytical and problem‑solving skills, data analysis, report writing, crisis response, communication, presentation, organization, and courteous service. Working Conditions Office and community work; flexible schedule with occasional long hours, evenings, weekends, and on‑call during program hours. May require overnight or weekend travel for staff training or event supervision. Salary & Benefits The salary range is $62,349.00 to $110,425.00 at the Senior Therapeutic Inclusion Specialist level.
