The Department of Motor Vehicles (Highway Patrol) is the lead agency for Vermont's Size and Weight Plan and the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. We are seeking a full-time Motor Vehicle Inspector, a law enforcement role focused on enforcing state size and weight statutes, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and highway safety operations. This position involves significant coordination with other state and federal agencies, law enforcement partners, industry groups, and internal DMV teams, including the Permit Unit and Commercial Vehicle Operations. We're looking for a motivated individual with strong time management skills and the ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field. The role is primarily outdoors and operates in all weather conditions. Assignments are usually scheduled two weeks in advance and may include motor vehicle patrols, fixed-site truck inspections, and other highway safety and infrastructure protection efforts based on agency needs. This position includes a take-home enforcement vehicle and a storage allowance per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Travel for training and mission-related assignments is required. Final candidates must successfully complete a criminal and motor vehicle record check, a full background investigation, and may be required to pass a polygraph examination.

The background investigation may include criminal, financial and traffic records checks. Duties are performed in the field, both in and out of a motor vehicle during an assigned shift under all types of climatic conditions. Incumbents must be able to carry and place portable scales weighing 35 lbs. or more under trucks as well as load and unload, with a winch, semi-portable scales weighing up to 1,300 pounds from trailers. Duties may require early morning, evening, night, weekend, or other irregular or overtime duty hours. Exposure to danger may occur during pursuit and apprehension of violators, handling hazardous materials, and working around large trucks and pieces of equipment. Attendance at meetings, court hearings, and seminars may be required. The Incumbent is a Vermont certified full-time law enforcement officer and is armed and drives a fully equipped police type vehicle. Threats of varying types and severity are possible.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma AND three (3) or more years in law enforcement experience. Preferred Qualifications: Background in automotive diagnostics and repair.

Special Requirements: Candidate must be a full-time certified Vermont law enforcement officer at time of hire or eligible for waiver from the Vermont Criminal Justice Council at time of hire. A current valid driver's license is required. Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions.
