Job Summary:

This is a Cardiac Telemetry travel nursing position on a primary cardiac and stroke unit. The unit is fast-paced and challenging, typically turning over 78 to 90 patients per week, meaning a nurse with a 6-patient assignment can end up turning over their complete assignment and starting over. A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges. The unit currently houses COVID-positive patients with the use of opti-flow and BIPAP; the high side (23-bed side) of CTU functions as a COVID unit that takes patients on opti-flow and acute BIPAPs during a COVID surge.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, and cardiac catheterization, including TR bands
• Care for post-uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedure/cardiac interventions without sheath(s)
• Manage patients on non-rebreather mask with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox)
• Manage patient diagnoses including unstable angina, low-risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias, all new CVA, and TIA patients
• Run and titrate multiple drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and similar cardiac drips
• Titrate Cardizem drips per unit protocols
• Manage and operate unit systems: Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR communication
• Operate special equipment including telemetry and pulse ox, high-flow O2 (stable), non-rebreather mask (palliative only), and BIPAP (chronic use only no new BIPAP)
• Adhere to float requirement as assigned
• Fulfill on-call requirement; frequency of on-call depends on patient census
• Meet weekend requirement: every other weekend, plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period
• Participate in self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership to balance as needed
• Be available every day during week one for hospital orientation (36-hour orientation)

Required Skills:

• IV Start proficiency
• Telemetry monitoring
• Pre- and post-procedure patient care for cardiac patients
• Cardiac drip management (Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, etc.)
• PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) experience
• Comfortable managing 1:56 patient ratios; must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
• Experience on a fast-paced unit with high acuity and high patient turnover
• Familiarity with Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR
• Willing to accept float assignments
• Comfortable with on-call requirements

Education Requirements:

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Required
• BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) Required
• NIH Stroke Scale certification Required
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Required Experience:

• Minimum 2 years of experience required; it is a challenging and very busy unit must have similar experience with ratios and acuity
• Traveler experience: willing to accept first-time travelers
• Local candidates accepted

Work Environment / Physical Requirements:

• Night shift: 12-hour nights, 18:45 07:15
• Target ratios: 1:56; could fluctuate based on unit needs travelers must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
• Unit accepts 1326 week contracts; 36 guaranteed hours offered
• No block scheduling
• Float requirement: Yes
• On-call requirement: Yes; frequency depends on patient census
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period required
• Self-scheduling per unit guidelines with leadership oversight to balance as needed
• Unit typically turns over 78 to 90 patients per week
• COVID-positive patients present on unit; use of opti-flow and BIPAP protocols in effect
• Scrubs: Navy blue or white scrubs, or a mixture of both; Novant t-shirts allowed all days of the week; jackets must be the same material (not fleece) and color as uniform; no crocs with holes

Important Notes:

• RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
• RTO maximum: 7-day max for AYA Auto Offer
• No block scheduling permitted
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
• Unit orientation: 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
