Physician Assistant

Physician Assistant, 2026-666 UConn Health is looking for a highly skilled Physician Assistant with a passion for patient experience. This position is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in delivery of direct clinical care services. The role will work in the Main Operating Room in the John Dempsey Hospital at UConn Health in Farmington. Schedule: This is a salaried position, full‑time 40 hours per week, five 8‑hour shifts with weekends, holidays and on‑call, flexible start times. Responsibilities Provides a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services including initial assessment and ongoing medical care. Works with considerable independence as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team. Takes medical histories, examines and treats patients, orders and interprets laboratory tests and x‑rays; formulates diagnoses and treatment plans, prescribes medications, monitors responses and adjusts accordingly. Documents and records progress notes and notifies attending physician of significant problems. Performs medical rounds to observe and document pertinent progress of hospitalized patients. Orders referrals to specialists as necessary. Responds to emergency situations. Counsels and instructs patients in preventive care and health issues such as effects of nutrition, exercise and prescribed treatments. Performs minor surgical procedures. Orders medical devices as necessary. Attends in‑service training programs on various health care services and treatments in conformance with mandated licensure requirements. Provides education and/or instruction to various health care staff members. Educates patients and guardians regarding disease process. Communicates changes in patient well‑being, treatment plan, medication side effects and appropriateness of daily activities to agency health care staff and community providers. May serve on hospital committees and participate in operative, perioperative, and emergency cardiac surgical care. Supports the institution's academic mission, including education and skills development of trainees and junior providers. Adheres to institutional policies, quality standards and patient safety protocols. Performs all related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology, different disciplines and disease states, medications and their interactions and reactions. Physical assessment skills; counseling skills; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills. Ability to perform invasive procedures. Ability to work independently, under pressure, formulate plans of care and make decisions. Experience and Training Incumbents must possess and maintain licensure as a Physician Assistant issued by the Connecticut State Department of Public Health, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration, U.S. DEA registration, and NCCPA certification. Must complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years. May be required to travel. Preferred Requirements Extensive cardiac surgery experience: minimum 15 years of direct operating room experience in adult cardiac surgery. Demonstrated experience with all open cardiac surgery procedures. Documented experience providing robotic cardiac surgery support. Advanced conduit harvesting expertise, including proficiency with the Terumo endoscopic vein harvesting system, documentation of more than 1,500 endoscopic saphenous vein harvests performed, and ability to independently perform endoscopic radial artery harvest. Academic and teaching experience, including training, mentoring and teaching cardiac surgery Physician Assistants, early‑career and newly trained providers. Professional credentials: eligibility for Connecticut PA licensure, ability to obtain institutional credentials and surgical privileges. Professional attributes: collaborate effectively within high‑acuity, multidisciplinary cardiac surgery environment; excellent professional references; prior direct clinical work experience with attending cardiac surgeons; prior experience providing transitional cardiac surgery coverage in an academic or tertiary care setting.
