About the Facility: West Haven VAMC The West Haven Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), located in West Haven, Connecticut, provides comprehensive healthcare services to veterans, offering a wide range of medical, mental health, and specialty care. As part of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, this facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a team of dedicated professionals who deliver expert care in areas such as primary care, cardiology, orthopedics, mental health, and rehabilitation. The West Haven VAMC is committed to improving the well-being of veterans by providing compassionate and accessible care to those who have served.

Medical Technologist - RESPONSIBILITIES

• The Medical Technologist performs patient/unit blood compatibility testing and issues compatible blood products if required.
• Independently operate high-complexity laboratory equipment according to department needs.
• Conduct proper patient identification (using 2 identifiers) and explain the methods of procedures, including special collection instructions, to obtain the best possible laboratory results.
• Coverage is required in specimen processing, hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, basic microbiology, and the blood bank.
• Perform phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary collections, on patients of all age groups.
• Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and standard laboratory protocols.
• The Medical Technologist maintains a quality control system for daily laboratory operations.
• Perform a variety of routine to highly complex tests, including but not limited to hematology, chemistry, blood banking, urinalysis, serology, reference testing, and microbiology.
• Maintain records for all laboratory functions, including equipment repairs, surveys, and testing documentation.
• Communicate effectively with staff, including notifying them of any equipment repairs or downtime.
• Maintain accurate daily records of patient workload and examinations.
• The Medical Technologist assists in emergency situations such as cardiac arrests, including performing CPR and recognizing/responding to anaphylaxis.

Medical Technologist - REQUIREMENTS

• Medical Technologists/Medical Lab Scientists: Must have a bachelor's degree/
• Must have AMT/ASCP certification as a generalist.
• Must have a minimum of one year's experience.
• Must have certification in current Basic Life Support (BLS)
