Health Technician

Position Overview This position is located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL, under the Nursing Service. It involves providing direct patient care, indirect patient care, and related supportive services under the general guidance of a Registered Nurse. Qualifications Time‑In‑Grade: Current Federal employees who have held any GS grade within the past 52 weeks must meet the time‑in‑grade requirement for a GS‑6 position (52 weeks in GS‑5). An SF‑50 confirming this eligibility must be submitted with the application. Specialized Experience: One year of experience at the GS‑5 grade level or equivalent in activities such as applying basic anatomy/physiology, supporting direct patient care, communicating with patients and healthcare professionals, operating and maintaining medical equipment, performing safety/emergency procedures, monitoring changes in patient behavior, conducting medical tests (phlebotomy, EKG, CPR), and entering data into computerized medical record systems. Experience may include paid, volunteer, or unpaid work that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s). Physical Requirements Extensive periods of standing and walking; regular bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and pushing using appropriate body mechanics or assistive devices. The employee must protect self and others from injury. Work Environment Responsibilities are performed in a health‑care setting. The Health Technician must practice aseptic technique, infection control, and environmental safety. Precautions are required when working with movable equipment, wet floors, and potential exposure to contagious diseases.
