BASIC FUNCTION
Under the general supervision of the assigned Administrator, administers preventive and rehabilitative treatment to students and athletes engaged in various high school sports and activities with specific instruction from coaching staff, team physician, and/or consulting physicians; fits uniforms and protective gear; remains available for athletic practices, home games, and specified away games; performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in athletic training, health, physical education, kinesiology, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed.
Preferred: One year of professional experience in athletic training, physical therapy, or a related field.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) from the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (BOC). Valid First Aid and CPR certification from an authorized agency. Access to reliable transportation for job-related travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic principles of athletic training, kinesiology, physiology, nutrition, diet, and first aid.
Symptoms and treatment of athletic injuries.
Physical fitness, hygiene, and safety procedures related to athletic programs.
Safety and protective equipment used in sports.
Disinfectant techniques.
Taping, bandaging and therapeutic techniques.
Clean and sterile equipment techniques.
First aid procedures and techniques.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques.
Community emergency medical resources.
Concepts of adolescent development and respective learning patterns and behavior characteristics specific to gender.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Record-keeping techniques.
Correct medical terminology and acceptable abbreviations.
General principles of supervision and training.
ABILITY TO:
Provide emergency care as needed including standard and advanced first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other life-sustaining efforts until paramedics or other medical assistance is available.
Perform appropriate lifting and carrying techniques for use when necessary (with non-ambulatory pupils).
Operate a variety of therapeutic equipment and machines.
Maintain composure in stressful situations.
Understand and carry out technical and other directions explicitly as issued by physicians.
Read and follow prescriptions for rehabilitation or treatment of injuries or illnesses related to participation in athletics.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Tape, bandage and splint athletes, administer first aid and immobilize injuries.
Operate a personal computer and utilize database and spreadsheet programs.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand and walk for extended periods of time with occasional running. Employees must be able to bend at the waist, stoop, kneel, squat, sit, have hand eye coordination, use dexterity of hands and fingers, grasp, hold, see to observe type and extent of injury, hear and speak to exchange information. Employees frequently push, pull, reach, reach overhead, independently lift and carry up to 50 lbs., push and move up to 100 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 150 lbs. with assistance associated with moving injured athletes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work in outside and inside environments such as an athletic training room, campus, or an athletic event. Employees drive a vehicle to various locations to conduct work, work evening and variable hours, encounter bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, airborne communicable diseases, extreme weather, uneven surfaces or elevations, and extreme noise levels.

SPECIALIZED ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Typically only performed in this classification)
Performs emergency evaluation, treatment and First Aid when necessary during school athletic activities which includes accompanying assigned teams on home and away games and being on-call for practices and host games held on campus.
Plans and supervises treatment and rehabilitation programs for injured athletes in accordance with standard medical protocols and/or with direction from team physicians and/or students' personal physicians.
Provides preventive taping and bandaging or rehabilitation prior to practices or games.
Certifies medical eligibility of students to return to full participation in the athletic program after an injury or illness.
GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Also performed in other classifications)
Supervises and maintains an orderly, sanitary, and safe high school athletic training facility.
Conducts in-service trainings for coaching staff, athletes, parents and others involved in the athletic program.
Advises on equipment and environmental safety; recommends and fits protective equipment for injury prevention and safety; monitors safety factors on all playing areas, insuring that all hazards are eliminated.
Assists coaching staff during season and in the off season to develop and implement injury prevention programs; advises coaching staff and student assistants on the care and prevention of athletic injuries including conditioning and warm-up exercises.
Prepares and maintains records in compliance with policies and state laws on all injuries and treatments administered; maintains records of physician's diagnosis, treatment, operative reports, prescriptions, physical examination reports, medical history forms, accident reports, injury management reports, and insurance forms; provides reports to coaches on injuries, medical reports, and status of athletes under treatment as required.
Assists in planning and participating in preseason athletic physical exams for student athletes.
Recommends training diet that meet the nutritional needs of student athletes.
Maintains necessary trainer's supplies and equipment inventory.
Organizes the transportation of athletic safety equipment, uniforms, and supplies for home and away events.
Supervises and instructs student assistants.
Travels to different sites as required.
Assists in arranging for physician and/or ambulance service when required.
Attends meetings and conferences.
May assist with accident reporting.
Performs related duties as assigned.
