Patients may include those with conditions such as CHF, dysrhythmias, chest pain, strokes, abdominal illnesses, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, acute kidney injury/chronic kidney disease, alcohol withdrawal, and intravenous drug abuse. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, with the possibility of 1:5 based on patient acuity. Licensed Practical Nurses (if applicable) are assigned a ratio of 4:1, and Certified Nursing Assistants have a daytime ratio of 1:12 and a nighttime ratio of 1:16. Support within the department includes a charge nurse to assist with all aspects of nursing care and resources such as phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, hospitalist coverage, and intensivist services available 24/7. Utilizing technology such as EMR systems and various monitoring equipment is expected. Floating may be required between facilities based on regional needs, and travel will be compensated if needed during shifts. Scheduling includes weekend rotation and potential call for low census. Travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays and can request days off as per guidelines. A family-oriented culture is promoted within the unit.
