Vascular Lab Technician

Responsible for the logging and processing of requisitions to the vascular laboratory and maintains adequate reports and files of all studies. Requires relaying information to the physician and patient care providers to provide diagnostic assistance when needed. Responsible for the evaluation of all equipment and the techniques for non-invasive vascular testing. Responsible for the day-to-day study performance in the noninvasive vascular diagnostic lab at the Manchester VAMC. The Vascular Lab Technician role is comprised of 1) direct performance of noninvasive vascular diagnostic studies (~95%), 2) administrative responsibilities associated with lab function including ICAVL accreditation and QA (~5%). Patient demographics must be entered correctly into the hospital computer system as well as the ultrasound equipment. A pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data in obtained to facilitate optimal diagnostic results. Performs high quality ultrasound exams of the cardiovascular system utilizing B-mode, 2 dimensional ultrasound, Color Doppler and Pulsed Wave Doppler measurements. Independently make standard examinations and makes more in-depth examinations when abnormalities are present. Advises the vascular physician and ordering provider of preliminary results of the exam, recognizing significant findings that require emergent care and relaying information to insure proper treatment. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergent procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them. Maintains records of patients treated, exams performed and ultrasounds taken in the department logbook. Process all worksheets and hard copy images, including the preliminary findings and presents to the vascular surgeon for interpretation. Receives patients, explains method of procedure, and prepares the patient for examination. After reviewing the patient's chart, determines the method of scanning to be used and makes the necessary machine adjustments and transducer selection appropriate for the exam. Routinely devises innovative and adaptive approaches to technical problems while working with patients to include adjustments of equipment and technique. Solving these problems is done independently so that the patients are not delayed or required repeating. Incumbent is knowledgeable of infectious disease control and the possibility of exposure to contagious disease and employs universal precautions. Reviews, evaluates and participates in the continuing education programs and refers to pertinent clinical literature with regards to improving the quality of examinations.
