Chemist 1 Position

As a Chemist 1 with the Department of Environmental Protection, you will play an important part in testing samples that help protect the environment. This position will give you experience with advanced equipment and laboratory methods. You will build strong skills in data review, sample handling, and scientific procedures. Your work will support efforts that keep communities safe and healthy.

This position supports laboratory testing that identifies environmental pollutants in a variety of samples. It involves receiving samples, preparing materials, operating instruments, and reviewing laboratory data. As a Chemist 1, you will perform the following duties:

• Sample Handling: Receive, organize, and document samples while maintaining chain of custody
• Extraction Work: Use approved techniques and solvents to extract analytes from environmental samples
• Instrument Operation: Operate various systems and review raw data to identify and quantify analytes
• Data Review: Check results for accuracy, evaluate unusual findings, and prepare information for reporting
• Quality Control: Follow laboratory methods, maintain quality control records, and use certified standards
• Laboratory Safety: Follow safety rules, maintain equipment, and support a safe work environment

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• This position requires travel
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,971 (before taxes).

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• A bachelor's degree in chemistry; or
• A bachelor's degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits

Other Requirements:

• You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
