Job Description Performs moderately complex inspections of ectoparasites including Cattle Fever Ticks, New World Screwworms, and other livestock pests and diseases at livestock markets, feedlots, slaughter plants, flea markets, farms, ranches, and other gathering places. Works under general supervision; may require irregular working hours, overtime, and occasional weekends. Temporary position funded through August 31, 2027. Responsibilities Perform inspections for signs of ectoparasites at various livestock sites. Monitor and survey livestock to identify infestations early to help prevent spread. Report suspected infestations to appropriate veterinarian staff and management. Collect samples for testing from cattle, swine, equine, exotics, sheep, goats, and poultry. Collaborate with state and federal agencies to assist with control measures. Enforce quarantines and other livestock disease control measures. Provide education to producers and the public on ectoparasites and importance of detection and reporting. Conduct public education contacts with media and organizations. Serve in a primary active role in emergency management activities and responses to disease outbreaks. Maintain accurate and detailed work activity records. Drive extensively; use personal or agency vehicle; may travel outside Laredo region. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from standard senior high school or GED. Inspector II: general experience working with livestock. Inspector III: at least 1 year livestock experience as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Inspector IV: at least 3 years livestock experience as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Inspector V: at least 5 years livestock experience as TAHC Livestock Inspector or USDA Animal Health Technician. Note: Inspectors cannot have personal involvement with livestock or poultry/fowl that creates an actual or perceived conflict of interest. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Establish and maintain effective working relationships with livestock producers, market owners/operators, local emergency coordinators, coworkers, and others. Keep detailed written records; use laptop, handheld data collection device, GPS, and other equipment. Effective oral and written communication skills; legible handwriting. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; safely handle livestock. Travel extensively, some overnight, and work occasional overtime as required. Physical & Other Requirements Arm, hand, shoulder, and back strength to handle livestock and equipment up to 50 pounds. Must lift 50 pounds overhead. Monthly cholinesterase testing; fit testing with respirator. Valid Texas driver’s license and safe driving record. Background check and driving record from Texas Department of Public Safety. Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.; males 18‑25 must provide proof of selective service registration or exemption. Additional Information This position is an emergency response agency role and may involve rotating temporary duty assignments away from headquarters for up to two weeks at a time, working in adverse conditions.
