Bus Operator

Reports To: Supervisor of Maintenance and Transportation

Terms Of Employment: Nine Months. Salary and work year established by the Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications:

• United States citizen or authorized alien
• 21 years of age or older
• High School Diploma or its equivalent
• Valid Commercial Driver's License
• Physical Exam prior to start of school
• Psychophysical exam prior to start of school
• Record check (MVR) obtained from Dept. of Public Safety by Transportation Department
• Employment eligibility and Criminal Record check/fingerprinting through Central Office
• 30 hours pre-service training (classroom)
• 10 hours behind the wheel training by local system
• Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with contacts in performance of duties, to include students, parents, guardians, all other stakeholders and employees of the Bogalusa City School District
• Physical and mental stamina and ability to perform job functions, tasks and duties

Overview Of The Position:

To transport children to and from school and on extra trips (when necessary) in the safest, most efficient manner possible.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Understands and executes Bogalusa City School District's policies and procedures.
2. Transports children to and from school and on extra trips when necessary in the safest, most efficient manner possible.
3. Adheres to applicable policies, statutes, and procedures set forth in State Bulletin 1191 School Transportation Handbook and State Bulletin 1475 Operational Vehicle Maintenance Procedures.
4. Picks up and unloads students only at designated bus stops.
5. Transports only students, teachers, and authorized personnel.
6. Refuses to admit animals, such as dogs, cats, etc. on the bus, except service animals covered under Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
7. Maintains bus in a clean and respectable condition, inside and out.
8. Reports ALL accidents IMMEDIATELY to the Supervisor of Transportation or the transportation office and completes required accident reports on time.
9. Calls police to the scene of an accident, loaded or unloaded. The proper police reports must accompany reports to the State Dept. of Public Safety (Form #SR10).
10. Prohibits firearms or weapons of any kind on the bus.
11. Notifies Supervisor of Transportation regarding bus or personal problems that will affect the bus schedule.
12. Maintains student discipline on the bus and reports misbehavior to the proper school authorities using the MISCONDUCT ON SCHOOL BUS report.
13. Provides current, correct mailing address; location of residence, telephone numbers and social security number.
14. Submits accurate information on the PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FOR BUS OPERATORS, ONEWAY MILEAGE FOR STATE T forms; and the route survey maps that include bus stops, number of students on each route, schools served, and time schedules.
15. Attends vehicle inspection in July or August and in December or January, periodic safety meetings (which include the psycho-physical exam), and a minimum of 8 hours in-service driver workshop training per year.
16. Helps maintain vehicle in top operating condition through daily use of state SCHOOL BUS PRE-TRIP checklist, forwards checklist to transportation department monthly and reports discrepancies when noted.
17. Contacts substitute drivers personally; uses ONLY substitutes approved by the Supervisor of Transportation and informs the transportation office of such driver changes as soon as possible.
18. Submits all payroll data, as required, to the transportation office by monthly deadline date.
19. Promptly reports all absences and late arrivals IMMEDIATELY to the transportation office.
20. Keeps a record (log) of all maintenance including date, mileage, type of repair and cost. This record should be kept in the bus at all times.
21. Drives regular school routes as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
22. Complies with all school opening and COVID-19 policies and procedures including, but not limited to, those governing facial coverings, food service, hygiene, cleaning, student monitoring, transportation, etc.
23. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent and/or Supervisor of Maintenance and Transportation.

While the operation of the Bogalusa City School Board and its schools is governed by the provisions of this and all other policies, as well as the procedures of the individual schools, no policy manual can list each and every instance of misconduct that is precluded. Accordingly, employees are cautioned that the appropriateness of certain action or behavior must necessarily be dictated by the nature of the position held by the employee and commonsense. By virtue of one's education and experience, an employee knows and understands that certain actions or conduct are unacceptable even in the absence of formal policy.

For instance, without the need of a specific prohibition or warning, a classroom teacher should be aware of the impropriety of certain practices such as leaving students unattended, using profanity or sexually suggestive language or bringing a firearm onto campus. Such conduct constitutes both incompetence and willful neglect of duty and will result in the imposition of discipline up to and including termination.

Evaluation: The Bus Driver shall be evaluated in accordance with the Bogalusa City Schools' Personnel Evaluation Plan.

This position description is intended to provide an overview of the requirements of the position.
