Java Technical Development Lead

CGI Njoyn

Job order - J0526-0650 - Permanent Full Time Title Java Technical Development Lead Category Software Development/ Engineering City Chicago, Illinois, United States Job Description We are looking for a seasoned Technical Development Lead to anchor a client‑facing engagement with a major retail pharmacy client in Chicago. This hands‑on technical leadership role will drive the design, build, and delivery of full‑stack solutions across Azure cloud‑hosted services, in‑store server components, and end‑user web frontends. You will lead an offshore pod of developers and QA engineers, managing a feature backlog and serving as the daily technical face for the client’s Business, Product, IT, QE, and Architecture stakeholders. The engagement scope includes Java/Spring Boot services (cloud and store server), TypeScript/Angular frontends, integrations with Oracle or Azure SQL Server, and potential private cloud deployments. Azure DevOps is the standard CI/CD and work‑management platform. This hybrid role requires someone local to Chicago, willing to be on‑site up to four days a week. Responsibilities Lead end‑to‑end design, development, and delivery of full‑stack components: Java/Spring Boot services and TypeScript/Angular frontends for the defined feature backlog. Own technical decisions for the pod: review designs, set coding standards, conduct code reviews, and enforce non‑functional requirements such as performance, resilience, security, and observability. Translate client backlog features into clear technical work items, estimate, sequence, and assign work across the offshore pod. Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the client’s Business, Product, and IT leadership; partner with Technical Architects to align solutions with enterprise architecture. Remain hands‑on by writing production‑grade code for complex or high‑risk components and unblocking the team on Java/Spring Boot and Angular/TypeScript technical issues. Collaborate with Quality Engineering to define test strategy, coverage expectations, and entry/exit criteria for releases. Lead the offshore pod, mentor team members, and cultivate technical depth across backend and frontend stacks. Establish and enforce engineering practices: branching strategy, pull‑request reviews, automated testing, CI/CD discipline in Azure DevOps, and release hygiene. Drive build/deploy quality so all delivered code is releasable to target environments—Azure cloud, store servers, and private cloud—with minimal rework. Run or co‑run agile ceremonies (backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, retrospectives) in coordination with the client’s delivery cadence; communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and trade‑offs clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Qualifications Minimum 10+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a technical lead capacity leading distributed/offshore pods. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. Proven delivery of Java/Spring Boot services and Angular/TypeScript frontends to production on Azure, including Spring Integration (Java DSL), REST integrations, Oracle and/or Azure SQL, and Azure DevOps pipelines. Exemplary written and verbal communication skills suitable for a client‑facing role. Technical depth in core Java (Java11, modern language features, concurrency, collections, streams, JVM fundamentals). Technical depth in Spring Boot (designing and building microservices and integration applications). Technical depth in Spring Integration (Java DSL) (EIP‑based flows with channels, gateways, transformers, routers, splitters/aggregators, and error handling). Knowledge of Angular & TypeScript (components, services, RxJS, routing, forms, integration with backend REST APIs). Design and consumption of REST APIs (JSON, authentication, error handling, retries, contract design). Oracle DB experience (Java/Spring, stored procedures, PL/SQL, performance). Azure SQL Server experience (schema design, query tuning, integration). In‑memory caching (Caffeine, Redis, or equivalent) with strategy, eviction, and consistency considerations. Day‑to‑day use of Azure DevOps for source control, CI/CD pipelines, and work‑item management. Proven leadership of distributed teams, presenting designs, defending decisions, and summarizing status to senior client stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications Building and consuming SOAP services, working with WSDLs, XML schemas, and SOAP fault handling. Asynchronous messaging via Azure Service Bus (queues/topics, idempotency, dead‑lettering, retry). Azure Cosmos DB (modeling, querying, integration into Spring applications). Flyway for database version management (migration design, environment promotion, rollback strategies). Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) (containerizing Spring Boot applications and deploying workloads). Prior experience in regulated domains such as retail pharmacy, healthcare, banking, or finance. Prior client‑facing engagement experience and familiarity with on‑site consulting delivery models. Compensation The current compensation range for this role in the U.S. is $88,200.00 – $173,500.00. Benefits Competitive compensation including profit participation program. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits. Basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
