Municipal Court Senior Probation Officer

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified and motivated Municipal Court Senior Probation Officer to supervise Municipal Court Probation Aides and Probation Officers. This position is responsible for assigning and monitoring work, providing guidance and feedback, and ensuring effective case management. The Municipal Court Senior Probation Officer manages complex adult probation cases, including conducting intake procedures, interviewing probationers, making treatment referrals, administering drug screenings, maintaining documentation, and attending court hearings to provide recommendations to the judge. This role also assists the Municipal Court Probation Administrator with developing policies, procedures, and training initiatives, and serves as a liaison with other departments and agencies. Employees must obtain Court Referral Officer certification through the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts. Work is performed primarily in an office and courtroom setting.

Minimum Qualifications

• Driver's License.
• Ability to obtain a certification from the Administrative Office of the Courts as a Court Referral Officer within twelve (12) months of hire.
• Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, public administration, business administration, criminal justice, or a related field.
• Experience managing a caseload within a team environment to ensure all work is completed by set deadlines and all information is organized and accurate.
• At least two (2) years' experience working in the field of drug/alcohol abuse counseling and/or law enforcement.

Typical Job Duties

• Performs administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files are accurate.
• Develops personalized case management plans by recommending treatment referrals, community-based referrals, and new probation orders to help probationers succeed.
• Completes intake procedures by reviewing probationers' background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
• Monitors probationers through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
• Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
• Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
• Collaborates with community agencies and professionals to facilitate classes and programs for defendants that have deferred prosecution and alternative sentencing.
• Conducts probation orientation and explains terms and conditions to the probationer to ensure that the probationer understands the terms and conditions of their probation.

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods.

Work is conducted both indoors in office settings as well as court room settings. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
