Job Posting Title: Lateral Police Officer (Detective) Hiring Department: University Police Department Position Open To: All Applicants Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40 FLSA Status: To Be Determined at Offer Earliest Start Date: Ongoing Position Duration: Expected to Continue Location: Austin, TX The lateral police officer detective position is a commissioned peace officer assigned to the Investigations and Mitigation Division of the University of Texas Police Department. The officer will conduct thorough investigations of criminal activity on and around the University of Texas at Austin campus. Responsibilities Investigate property crimes. Investigate crimes against persons. Collect, preserve, and analyze evidence. Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate case files. Interview suspects and witnesses. Collaborate with outside agencies. Testify in court proceedings related to investigations. Gather information and research situations to maintain situational awareness and assess risk. May perform traditional law enforcement duties during special events and may include periods of on‑call status. Required Qualifications Advanced TCOLE certification and a current TCOLE peace officer license, or be held with no more than 180 days break in service. Comparable state licenses may be considered. Valid driver’s license and eligibility to drive a university‑owned or leased vehicle. Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience as a full‑time law‑enforcement investigator or a related assignment at a comparable or larger agency. Ability to provide credible court testimony, including presentation to grand juries. Successful completion of a six‑month probation period. Pass a background investigation. Preferred Qualifications Ten (10) years of experience as a full‑time investigator or related assignment at a full‑service law‑enforcement agency. TCOLE Master peace officer license. TCOLE Instructor certification. Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in interviews, investigative techniques, and warrant execution. Experience coordinating with district and county prosecutor’s offices for multi‑unit investigations. Strong written and oral communication skills; proficiency in investigative platforms such as Cloud Gavel or Techshare. Supervisory experience in an investigative unit. Knowledge of open‑source investigations and threat‑assessment best practices. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Driving Required This position requires a class C driver’s license. Applicants must provide a current three‑year driving record. Non‑Texas residents must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a resident. CDL holders are subject to drug and alcohol testing. Salary Range $72,098.00 plus additional compensation based on qualifications. Working Conditions Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment furnished. Work may occur in all weather and extreme temperatures. Work may involve office, electrical, or mechanical hazards. Repetitive use of a keyboard. Manual dexterity, climbing stairs or ladders, lifting and moving. Work involves a degree of danger. Work Shift Standard university schedule, Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. May be required to work day or night hours, weekends, and holidays with varying days off. May perform traditional law‑enforcement duties during special events and may include on‑call periods.
