Municipal Fleet Heavy Equipment Technician
When a refuse truck won’t compact, a street sweeper loses suction, or sewer equipment stalls mid-route, you’re the calm at the center—diagnosing quickly, repairing precisely, and returning essential municipal assets to safe, efficient service.
A day in the lifeMorning starts with a quick review of service tickets: a street sweeper with an electrical fault, a refuse truck with weak hydraulics, and a sewer jetter in need of routine service. You move from systematic diagnostics to hands-on repair—tracing electrical issues, inspecting diesel components, and tuning mechanical systems. When a bracket needs reinforcement, you weld and fabricate what the job requires. Throughout the day, you document the details on each work order and keep supervisors and teammates in the loop so schedules stay on track. Before you wrap up, you reset the bay, tidy your tools, and pitch in on any remaining tasks.
What you’ll work on- Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, diesel, and mechanical systems on municipal equipment (refuse trucks, street sweepers, sewer equipment)
- Complete routine maintenance and preventative services to maximize uptime
- Troubleshoot complex faults and provide clear repair recommendations
- Weld and fabricate parts and attachments as required by the repair
- Record findings and repairs accurately on work orders
- Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and supervisors
- Keep service and delivery schedules on track by maintaining equipment readiness
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace
- Assist with additional duties as needed
- 1–3 years of experience repairing heavy or municipal equipment
- Hands-on knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Basic to intermediate welding and fabrication ability
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Detail orientation with a safety-first mindset
- Independent time management and deadline ownership
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical job duties
