Senior Project EngineerWe are seeking a Senior Project Engineer to support large-scale power infrastructure projects that enable critical data center operations. This role is responsible for leading engineering execution across the full project lifecycle—from concept through detailed design and transition to construction—ensuring delivery aligns with scope, schedule, cost, and quality objectives.This is a high-impact opportunity to work on complex, high-visibility projects while driving engineering excellence, innovation, and operational efficiency.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Engineering & ExecutionLead engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, including conceptual design, engineering planning, detailed design, and construction handoffManage external engineering firms to ensure alignment with scope, schedule, budget, and quality standardsDrive the development and review of engineering deliverables, including drawings, specifications, and design packagesConduct constructability reviews and support smooth transition to construction teamsProject Management & CoordinationPartner closely with Project Managers and Project Controls teams to manage project schedules and budgetsDevelop and support capital engineering execution plans aligned to financial targetsCoordinate cross-functional collaboration with internal stakeholders and external partnersMonitor engineering performance, risks, and progress using project management tools and systemsTechnical Leadership & OptimizationApply industry standards and engineering best practices to define project scope and ensure design integrityIdentify risks early and incorporate mitigation strategies into engineering deliverablesDrive continuous improvement, design optimization, and cost-effective engineering solutionsPromote adoption of tools, technologies, and best practices to enhance engineering outcomesLeadership & CollaborationLead, mentor, and develop junior engineers and project team membersFoster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous improvementSupport training and knowledge-sharing across the organizationBuild strong partnerships across Engineering, Construction, Operations, and FinanceBasic QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (ABET-accredited)7–9 years of experience in electric utility engineering or operations1–3 years of experience leading teams, contractors, or projectsStrong knowledge of utility infrastructure, engineering design, and construction practicesExperience with project budgeting, forecasting, and cost managementFamiliarity with industry codes, regulations, and safety standardsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and AutoCAD (or equivalent)Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skillsValid driver's license and ability to pass DOT drug testingPreferred QualificationsMaster's Degree in Engineering, Business, or related field10+ years of experience in utility engineering or operationsProfessional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain)Project Management Professional (PMP) certificationExperience supporting large-scale infrastructure or data center projectsWhat You'll BringAbility to manage complex engineering projects with minimal oversightStrong leadership and stakeholder management skillsExpertise in balancing technical solutions with financial performanceCommitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfactionA proactive mindset with a focus on innovation and continuous improvementWhy Join UsWork on high-profile, large-scale data center infrastructure projectsCollaborate with industry-leading teams and technologiesDrive meaningful impact in a rapidly growing, critical sectorOpportunities for career growth, leadership, and professional developmentAs a public utility, NiSource is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times.
