Job Description

The Production Mechanic (7pm-330am) maintains, troubleshoots, and overhauls high-speed production and packaging equipment while performing all duties of lower mechanic levels. This role leads changeovers, performs advanced corrective repairs, fabricates parts, and provides specialist service and training in areas such as machine shop operations, industrial electricity, pipe fitting, and predictive maintenance across a variety of production lines.

Responsibilities

• Examine, test, and measure product from the assigned area to ensure adherence to quality specifications and take corrective action when defects are identified.

• Review the established production schedule at the start of each shift to determine production runs, required changeovers, and scheduled maintenance for the assigned area.

• Readjust production lines and perform changeovers on assigned equipment for different products, materials, sizes, and pack patterns, including running first-piece production and verifying conformance to quality standards.

• Perform preventive maintenance checks during the shift and take appropriate corrective actions to minimize downtime and maintain equipment reliability.

• Record production delays and maintain accurate downtime records for tracking and analysis.

• Advise leadership on recurring equipment malfunctions and provide detailed information to support long-term corrective actions.

• Clean and sanitize equipment and all necessary parts as required or specified by procedures and standards.

• Monitor equipment for unsafe conditions and either recommend or implement corrective actions to address equipment malfunctions and safety concerns.

• Provide and use personal hand tools, as specified, to perform repairs and adjustments on production equipment.

• Analyze, diagnose, and resolve mechanical and operational problems on equipment in the assigned area and implement effective corrective actions.

• Analyze defective production to determine root cause, take corrective action, and document and report issues for further analysis.

• Maintain the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic functions of production equipment in the assigned area.

• Replace worn or defective parts such as bearings, sprockets, chains, belts, limit switches, air cylinders, valves, and similar components.

• Perform major overhaul and repair work on all production equipment, including fillers, cappers, labelers, conveyors, and packaging machinery.

• Maintain an inventory of spare parts for equipment in the assigned area and prepare purchase requisitions for needed parts and supplies for authorization.

• Assist in training production workers on the proper operation of equipment and the safety precautions required when working on or near machinery.

• Assist in training Production Mechanics at Levels 1 and 2, sharing technical knowledge and best practices.

• Provide input into the development of specifications for new machinery to support production and maintenance needs.

• Assist leadership in the setup, utilization, and evaluation of the plant maintenance program.

• Use data from the preventive maintenance program and other production records to identify root causes of production and equipment problems and recommend and implement corrective actions.

• Perform advanced electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, particularly on PLC-controlled and industrial machinery, to restore equipment to proper operation.

• Support efficient line setup and machine adjustments to optimize production throughput and minimize changeover time.

Essential Skills

• At least 4 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in plastics or packaging environments.

• Demonstrated proficiency in at least three of the following: welding, machine shop operations, industrial electricity, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), or pipe fitting.

• Proven ability to perform changeovers and repairs on at least eight production lines prior to progression to the next mechanic level.

• Strong electrical skills with the ability to perform electrical troubleshooting and maintenance on industrial machinery, including three-phase systems.

• Solid mechanical aptitude with experience in mechanical troubleshooting, machinery maintenance, and repair.

• Hands-on experience with pneumatics and hydraulics on production equipment.

• Ability to perform extensive troubleshooting on packaging equipment such as unscramblers, fillers, cappers, cartoners, case packers, and labelers.

• Ability to read and interpret machinery and electrical blueprints and schematics and apply information from setup and maintenance manuals.

• Ability to use hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches safely and effectively.

• Ability to use precision measuring devices to verify dimensions and tolerances.

• Ability to convert units of measure, including ounces to pounds, grams to ounces, and feet to meters.

• Experience with PLC troubleshooting and electro-mechanical systems in an industrial environment.

• Capability to maintain and repair industrial machinery including conveyors, fillers, tappers, labelers, and packaging equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Ability to stick weld stainless and mild steel in all positions.

• Ability to TIG and/or MIG weld stainless and carbon steel.

• Ability to cut, weld, and braze using gas welding equipment.

• Experience working with industrial motors and drives.

• in maintenance repair and maintenance mechanics in a production setting.

• Experience with setup and adjustment of machines for different products, sizes, and pack patterns.

• Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and predictive maintenance practices.

• Comfort working with both mechanical and electrical aspects of equipment, with strength in multiple technical areas.

• Experience working from blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation in a fast-paced production environment.

Work Environment

This role operates in a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment with active production lines and packaging equipment. You work around industrial machinery such as fillers, tappers, labelers, conveyors, and other packaging equipment, following strict safety and cleanliness standards. You wear safety glasses, hair nets or beard guards as applicable, and closed-toe shoes while on the production floor. The use of cell phones and personal music devices is not permitted on the manufacturing floor to ensure safety and focus. The warehouse and production areas can become warm during the summer months, and you may be regularly exposed to a noticeable menthol smell. Work is performed on-site in a hands-on setting that requires frequent interaction with equipment, tools, and production personnel

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Oak Brook, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $74360.00 - $83710.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
