Medical Record Examiner

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is proud to employ nearly 1,500 veterans and actively serving military members across the department. Responsibilities Maintain prisoner health records in accordance with federal and state statutes and departmental policies and procedures. Assist with documenting diagnosis codes on prisoner records. Maintain health care databases and perform continuous quality improvement activities and reports. Coordinate the distribution of health record information. Process release of information requests. Prepare hard‑copy health records for transfer and receive hard‑copy records. Train new health care employees using the Electronic Medical Record system. Coordinate and track specialty health care appointments. Education Possession of an associate’s degree in health information or medical record technology. Experience Medical Record Examiner 8 – No specific type or amount of experience required. Medical Record Examiner 9 – One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 8. Medical Record Examiner E10 – Two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 9. Certification Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as either a Registered Health Information Technician or a Registered Health Information Administrator. Eligibility The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation. Training New hires and returning employees who have been away for more than two years will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) of either 40 or 80 hours of in‑person training based on offender contact level and job classification, plus additional online training. All employees must meet high ethical standards and report any possible conflict of interest.
