Core Technical Engineer – Soft Trim Materials Engineer (Contract) Auburn Hills, MI, United States (On-site) Contract (1 month 16 days) Published 2 days ago Testing & Validation Material Development cross - functional collaboration program management microsoft office Responsible for the development of Automotive Soft Trim Materials (fabrics, synthetic skins, carpeting, leather, etc.) for Company vehicle applications; Responsible for working closely with Design Office, Product Engineers, sub-tier suppliers and materials suppliers in the formulation, development and specification of materials as well as integration into vehicle applications. Knowledge of vehicle materials is a plus for this position. The engineer will also be responsible for approving production suppliers and managing short and long term materials development programs. In addition, the engineer will be responsible for the development of materials, processes, and preferred practices for vehicle applications. The engineer is responsible for maintaining materials specifications for their respective area. Key Responsibilities: Develop and engineer automotive soft trim materials, including fabrics, synthetic skins, carpeting, and leather for vehicle applications. Collaborate with Design Office, Product Engineers, material suppliers, and sub-tier suppliers on material formulation, development, and specification. Support the integration of materials into vehicle applications and ensure performance requirements are met. Lead short-term and long-term materials development programs. Evaluate, approve, and manage production material suppliers. Develop and improve materials, manufacturing processes, and best practices for vehicle applications. Create, maintain, and update material specifications and standards for assigned product areas. Provide technical expertise on vehicle interior materials and support material selection decisions. Ensure materials meet quality, durability, performance, and regulatory requirements. Drive continuous improvement and innovation in automotive soft trim materials and processes. Mandatory Skills: B. S. in Materials Engineering or Material Sciences from an ABET accredited University A minimum of 2 years materials engineering experience with soft trim materials; Materials, application development, specification and product support. Must excel in a team environment, including shared team responsibilities. Must exhibit strong oral and written communication skills, strong problem-solving skills, and strong planning skills. Must be able to work independently. Strong leadership and interpersonal (soft people) skills. Ability to summarize and present work to cross functional teams as well as senior management. The ability to develop long term strategies for vehicle materials to achieve corporate objectives Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office applications Preferred Qualifications: M.S. in Materials Engineering, Material Science from an ABET accredited University Extensive experience with material development of fabric, leather and/or synthetic skin materials at an automotive material supplier and/or tier one supplier a plus. OEM Materials Engineering experience a plus.
