Director of Finance

The Director of Finance serves as the second-in-command within the Finance Department, providing leadership and oversight of Levine’s day-to-day accounting and financial operations. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial records and reporting and serves as a key resource to organizational leadership on financial matters. The Director has primary responsibility for core accounting operations, including general ledger accounting, accounts payable and receivable, contribution and restricted fund accounting, monthly close, and financial reporting. The position also provides critical backup for payroll and other essential Finance functions and serves as an important source of continuity within the department. Key Responsibilities Finance Leadership & Accounting Operations Serve as the second-in-command within the Finance Department and provide day-to-day leadership of accounting operations. Partner with the CFO in establishing priorities, maintaining internal controls, and improving Finance processes and procedures. Oversee general ledger activity, monthly and year-end close, journal entries, accruals, deferrals, and account reconciliations. Maintain accurate records for fixed assets, depreciation and amortization, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, and other significant balance sheet accounts. Assist with monthly financial statements, management reporting, year-end close, and annual audit activities. Provide backup leadership for critical Finance functions in the CFO’s absence. Maintain accurate accounting records for contributions, grants, pledges, and other philanthropic revenue. Ensure contributions are properly recorded based on donor restrictions and applicable accounting requirements. Monitor restricted fund balances and ensure timely and accurate releases from restriction based on the fulfillment of donor-imposed restrictions. Maintain supporting schedules for restricted funds and releases and reconcile contribution activity between the accounting system and Raiser’s Edge. Work closely with Development and program staff to ensure appropriate documentation and accounting treatment of restricted contributions. Assist the CFO and Development leadership in monitoring restricted fund activity and identifying potential compliance issues. Ensure accurate and timely reporting of tuition revenue and related activity. Prepare year-to-date tuition revenue reporting comparing actual results to budget, including analysis of significant variances and emerging trends. Monitor and report enrollment counts and enrollment trends in relation to tuition revenue and budget performance. Work closely with Education and program leadership to ensure enrollment and tuition information is accurately reflected in financial reporting. Identify significant changes in enrollment or tuition trends that may affect current-year results and forecasts. Support the CFO in incorporating tuition and enrollment trends into financial projections. Budget & Financial Reporting Assist the CFO with annual budget preparation, monitoring, and reporting. Prepare accurate and timely budget-to-actual reporting and identify significant variances requiring management attention. Provide financial information and analysis to support management decision-making. Assist with financial forecasting and year-end projections. Prepare and maintain financial reports for management and organizational leadership. Payroll & Other Operational Backup Serve as the primary backup for payroll processing, including review of payroll previews prior to submission and filing. Assist with payroll-related reconciliations and resolution of payroll discrepancies. Provide backup coverage for accounts payable, accounts receivable, contribution accounting, monthly close, and other critical Finance functions. Maintain confidentiality and appropriate internal controls over payroll and other sensitive financial information. Internal Controls & Process Improvement Maintain and strengthen internal controls over accounting, contributions, payroll, and financial transactions. Ensure appropriate segregation of duties and documentation of financial processes. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting, systems integration, and data accuracy. Maintain procedures and documentation that support operational continuity and institutional knowledge. Partner with Development, Education, Human Resources, Operations, and other departments on financial matters. Provide financial guidance regarding revenue, expenses, budgeting, accounting procedures, and reporting. Promote financial accountability, transparency, and effective use of organizational resources. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience. Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including restricted and unrestricted contributions and net asset accounting. Demonstrated experience with general ledger accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting. Experience with contribution and restricted fund accounting and payroll processing. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively with non-financial staff. High degree of integrity and discretion in handling confidential financial information. Preferred: CPA or other relevant certification; nonprofit experience; familiarity with Blackbaud or similar accounting systems. Relationship with the CFO The CFO retains primary responsibility for financial strategy, long-range planning, budget leadership, financial analysis, Board and committee reporting, banking and investment relationships, risk management, and overall financial stewardship. The Director of Finance provides the operational accounting leadership and execution necessary to support these responsibilities and serves as the CFO’s principal operational partner within the Finance Department.
