Ophthalmic Technician
(Requires previous experience working in an ophthalmology or optometric setting)
Job Type: Full-Time, Direct-Hire (Permanent placement on company payroll with immediate full benefits; not a temporary job )
Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Oakland; periodic travel to neighboring regional clinical sites required)
Schedule: Monday – Friday, Day Shift (Daylight schedule with hours between 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM based on clinic needs; no evenings or weekends, select holidays off)
New Hire Starting Base Pay: $21.14 – $24.64 per hour (Starting pay based on experience, with clear advancement pathways as you build specialized expertise.)
Future Earning Potential: Established employees have the opportunity to earn progressive pay increases up to $35.13 per hour over time through performance, tenure, and continuous learning.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Education & Credentials: High School Diploma or GED required; completion of the AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) Home Study Course preferred.
- Clinical Ophthalmology/Optometry Experience: Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or Optometric Assistant in an eye care setting (or an equivalent combination of related clinical education and experience).
- Ophthalmic Diagnostic Capabilities: Experience performing patient workups, history taking (ocular, medical, family, social, and medications), visual acuity testing, lensometry (manual/automated), pupil assessments, and confrontational visual fields.
- Tonometry & Refraction Skills: Experience or familiarity with tonometry (ICare, Tonopen, Applanation), refractometry (auto-refractors, manifest refractions, transposing scripts), and instrument disinfection.
- Travel Flexibility: Ability to travel to neighboring regional clinical locations as needed.
How You'll Make an Impact
- Comprehensive Patient Evaluations: Perform detailed clinical workups for walk-in follow-ups, diabetic eye exams, comprehensive vision checks, and cataract evaluations.
- Specialized Ocular Diagnostics: Conduct visual field tests (Amsler grid), ocular motility checks, cover tests, stereo-acuity, glare/color testing, angle assessments, and pupil dilation.
- Procedure Preparation & Consent: Assist physicians with laser and minor medical procedures, obtain patient informed consent, and set up sterile/procedural fields.
- Contact Lens Care Support: Provide patient instruction on contact lens insertion, removal, and care
- Clinic Maintenance & Sterilization: Clean, disinfect, and sterilize diagnostic instruments, maintain inventory, restock exam rooms, and maintain clean patient care areas between visits.
