General Description and Classification Standards:

Responsible, in a lead role, for supporting the Collection or Sewer Department, focusing on responding to 311 calls related to sewer spills, odor complaints, cave-ins, and cleaning catch basins. Responsibilities include repairing sewer mains, installing service line clean-outs, and assisting with law enforcement activities such as removing weapons from catch basins. Additionally, the role involves operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, as well as hand and power tools, to ensure the safety and optimal functioning of the plant. Duties also entail transporting containers to landfills, servicing and refueling vehicles, and assisting maintenance mechanics as needed. Moreover, the position involves distributing chemicals for water cleaning, conducting hourly water sample tests, and adjusting chemical dosages to meet water distribution requirements, thereby ensuring the integrity and quality of the water treatment process throughout the shift. This role may also entail substituting for supervisors when necessary and assisting other crews as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Utilize Georgia Commercial Driver's license for operating vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Perform tasks related to unblocking service cleanouts and clearing manhole spills to ensure proper sewer system function.
• Draft detailed reports documenting inspections, task completions, and recommendations for maintenance activities.
• Clear debris from catch basins, storm lines, and grates to prevent blockages and maintain water flow.
• Diagnose the causes of cave-ins and operate equipment such as Vactors and hand rods to remove blockages from service lines.
• Ensure safety at work areas by setting up necessary precautions to protect the public and flagging traffic for crew safety.
• Conduct pre-trip inspections on equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety standards.
• Move grit or rag boxes as required for maintenance operations.
• Take vehicles for refueling, transport containers to the landfill for disposal, and facilitate vehicle maintenance as needed.
• Assist maintenance mechanics with their duties to support overall plant operations.
• Attend safety classes and meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and regulations.
• Perform hourly tests on water samples, make chemical dosages as needed, and monitor water treatment processes to maintain quality standards.
• Constantly monitor water entering and exiting the treatment facility to ensure proper filtration and treatment.
• Maintain safe water levels in treatment basins and conduct calibration on testing equipment before the start of each shift.
• Check chemical pumps and hoses for leaks to prevent hazardous situations and ensure the integrity of the treatment process.
• Respond promptly to 311 calls regarding sewer spills, odor complaints, and other sewer-related issues.
• Assist in locating manholes in wooded areas that may contribute to contamination of water sources.
• Assist law enforcement in removing loaded weapons or other hazardous materials from catch basins.
• Aid the public in retrieving personal items, such as keys, cell phones, and tablets, from catch basins.
• Clean grates and remove floodwater from public roads to ensure safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians.
• Substitute for supervisors during their absence, assuming leadership responsibilities, as necessary.
• Assist other crews as needed, collaborating with colleagues to accomplish departmental goals.
• Ensure the safety and optimal functioning of the water treatment plant by operating heavy equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders.
• Transport containers to the landfill for proper disposal, contributing to waste management efforts.
• Attend safety classes and meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and regulations, promoting a culture of safety within the workplace.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of department policies and procedures: Knowledge of general site safety as it pertains to wastewater operations and maintenance. Methods, products, tools and equipment used in wastewater maintenance and construction work; of basic mathematical principles.

• Skill: in operating a variety of light to heavy power equipment (vactor truck, backhoe, excavator); in maintenance of tools and equipment (pumping equipment, hydraulic excavator, concrete socket).

• Ability: to understand and apply pertinent policies, procedures and regulations; to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; to perform maintenance activities involving skills in the functional fields to which assigned; to maintain records and make simple reports; to work beyond normal working hours, as required.

• Ability to trouble shoot as it pertains to heavy equipment (sewer).

• Ability to communicate diplomatically with customers to successfully address concerns.

• Ability adapt to changes in work environment.

• Ability to document work status with photos and data input.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience -

1. High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
2. Two (2) years of experience in construction and/or wastewater collection system.

Licensures and Certifications - Georgia Commercial Driver's B license.

Lifting Requirements:

Sedentary work : Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Light work : Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

Medium work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
