Mohs Technician (Histotechnician)The Mohs Technician (Histotechnician) plays a critical role in supporting Mohs micrographic surgery by preparing, processing, and staining tissue specimens for immediate microscopic evaluation. This position works closely with the Mohs Surgeon to ensure accurate tissue mapping, high-quality slide preparation, and timely turnaround of specimens.The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, organized, and capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced surgical and laboratory environment.Tissue Processing & HistologyReceive, verify, and properly label surgical specimensEmbed, freeze, and section tissue using a cryostatCut high-quality frozen sections suitable for microscopic evaluationPerform routine and special stains (e.g., H&E staining)Mount, label, and prepare slides for immediate review by the Mohs SurgeonMaintain accurate tissue orientation and mapping to ensure complete margin evaluationLaboratory OperationsOperate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment (cryostat, staining systems, microscopes)Monitor and maintain proper laboratory conditions, including temperature control and reagent qualityMaintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagentsEnsure cleanliness, organization, and efficiency of the Mohs laboratoryQuality Control & ComplianceFollow established laboratory protocols and quality assurance proceduresEnsure accuracy, consistency, and integrity of all tissue processing and slide preparationMaintain compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards and applicable state regulationsAdhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and OSHA requirementsParticipate in lab audits, inspections, and documentation processesSurgical SupportAssist the Mohs Surgeon and clinical team as needed during proceduresCoordinate workflow to ensure efficient case turnaround timesCommunicate effectively with clinical staff regarding specimen status and workflow updatesDocumentation & RecordkeepingMaintain accurate records of specimens, slides, and lab activitiesDocument quality control measures and equipment maintenance logsEnsure proper labeling and traceability of all specimensCommon General DutiesMaintain strict patient confidentiality at all timesFollow all company policies, procedures, and safety standardsReport equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptlyDemonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitudeComplete all tasks within established timelinesMaintain regular attendance and punctualityPerform additional duties as assignedRequirementsEducation & ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent requiredCompletion of a Histotechnology program or relevant training preferredPrior experience as a Mohs Technician or Histotechnician strongly preferredDermatology or surgical laboratory experience preferredCertifications (Preferred)Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferredKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesStrong understanding of histology techniques and tissue processingExperience with cryostat operation and frozen sectioningExcellent attention to detail and manual dexterityAbility to work efficiently under time-sensitive conditionsStrong organizational and multitasking skillsEffective communication and teamwork abilitiesProfessional AttributesHigh level of accuracy and precision in all tasksCommitment to patient safety and quality outcomesStrong work ethic and accountabilityAbility to adapt to a fast-paced surgical environmentTeam-oriented mindsetPhysical RequirementsProlonged standing and movement within lab and surgical areasManual dexterity for fine sectioning and slide preparationAbility to lift up to 20 pounds (lab supplies/equipment)Work EnvironmentOn-site Mohs laboratory within a dermatology clinicExposure to biological specimens, chemicals, and laboratory equipmentFast-paced, high-volume surgical environmentFlexibility ClauseThis job description is intended to provide a general overview of the role.
