Job Description

This role leads the mechanic team to overhaul, service, and repair large natural gas compression engines in a clean, well-organized shop environment. The Lead Engine Mechanic performs complete engine overhauls—from disassembly and diagnosis through repair, reassembly, and commissioning—on large-scale power-generating engines such as Caterpillar, Superior, and Waukesha models. This position also provides hands-on guidance, coaching, and training to less-experienced mechanics while ensuring high-quality, reliable work that supports a strong backlog of customer demand.

Responsibilities

• Perform full overhauls of large-scale natural gas engines, including complete disassembly, inspection, diagnosis, repair, and reassembly.

• Troubleshoot mechanical issues on large natural gas compression and power-generating engines to identify root causes and determine effective repair strategies.

• Work extensively on engines such as Caterpillar C18, C30, Cat 3500, Cat 3600 series (3608, 3612, etc.), Waukesha 7042, and Waukesha 7044, as well as similar large industrial units.

• Use OD and ID micrometers and other precision measurement tools to verify tolerances and ensure components meet specifications during overhaul and repair.

• Interpret and work from engine schematics, technical drawings, and repair documentation to execute accurate and efficient repairs.

• Lead and coach a team of mechanics by sharing technical expertise, demonstrating best practices, and providing on-the-job training to less-experienced team members.

• Oversee engine overhauls in the shop environment, ensuring work quality, adherence to procedures, and completion within expected timeframes.

• Collaborate with machinists, welders, and other shop personnel to coordinate repair activities and ensure all required work on engine components is completed.

• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area and follow all shop safety guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment.

• Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding job status, technical issues encountered, and any additional work required.

• Contribute to continuous improvement of shop processes by providing feedback on tools, methods, and procedures used in engine overhaul and repair.

Essential Skills

• 10+ years of experience working on natural gas compression engines.

• Proven experience as a Lead Mechanic or in a supervisory capacity in an engine repair or overhaul environment.

• Hanxperience overhauling large natural gas engines in a shop setting, including full teardown and rebuild.

• Extensive experience working on Caterpillar, Superior, or Waukesha engines

• Proficiency using OD and ID micrometers and other precision measurement tools for engine component inspection.

• Strong mechanical aptitude in engine repair, troubleshooting, and diagnostics, with the ability to read and interpret schematics and technical documentation.

• Ability to coach, mentor, and train less-experienced mechanics in a shop environment.

• Experience with engine commissioning following overhaul or major repair.

• Demonstrated ability to work safely in an industrial shop environment while maintaining high quality standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications - Extra but not Required

• Experience commissioning large industrial engines and generators in the field or shop.

• Welding skills applicable to engine and component repair.

• Machining experience or familiarity with working alongside CNC and manual machinists on engine components.

• Industrial generator experience, particularly in power generation applications.

• Previous employment or direct experience with organizations specializing in Caterpillar, Superior, Waukesha, or similar large engine equipment.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with welders, machinists, warehouse staff, and other shop personnel.

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in high-precision mechanical work.

Work Environment

• The role is based in a large, clean, and highly organized manufacturing and repair shop with multiple dedicated work bays. The facility includes specific areas for mechanics, welding, disassembly, machining, shipping and receiving, and tool storage, supporting efficient workflows and clear separation of tasks.

• The shop is open-air and not climate controlled, but large fans help maintain air circulation and comfort.

• You will work alongside a skilled team that includes mechanics, warehouse staff, CNC and manual machinists, welders, painters, and other support personnel.

• The standard schedule is a first shift, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m ., with the option to start earlier at 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. and the opportunity to work later to reach approximately 50 hours per week, depending on production needs.

• There is no night shift.

• The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, jeans, a work shirt, and safety glasses to maintain a safe and professional shop environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Deer Park, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.09 - $34.15/hr.
