Associate Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment, Emergency Medicine

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
This is a faculty position reports to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine.

GENERAL DUTIES:
The Associate Professor will be working for the Emergency Center and must possess strong communication skills to communicate with patients, providers, and other faculty members within the Institution. Provides clinical expertise in patient care management and provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents and students in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. The Associate Professor must have outstanding analytical skills in order to make judgments regarding the patient's medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care. Likewise, the Associate Professor must manage patients and their families in a compassionate and positive manner.

The Associate Professor will involve a significant amount of clinical time delivering emergency medicine care to cancer patients. Additional responsibilities may include a portion of protected time to pursue clinical research studies as well as academic work related to teaching residents, mentoring oncologic emergency medicine fellows and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Clinical Practice (75%)
A. Represent the Department of Emergency Medicine in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to the field of Oncologic Emergency Medicine. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and disseminating the information obtained colleagues.

B. Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Emergency Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.

1. Provide physician coverage for the Department of Emergency Medicine at a level commensurate with that provided by other emergency physicians with the same level of training and experience. The Emergency Department is operates 24 hours/7 days a week/365 days a year. Average physician shifts range between 8 to 12 hours.

2. Perform a number of tasks, including diagnosing problems, ordering tests, treating symptoms, and creating post-emergency treatment plans. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.

3. Provide related diagnosis and comprehensive documentation using an EPIC based electronic health record. All documentation must be completed within 48 hours of date of service.

4. Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment. This includes consultation requests for patients either by phone or in writing.

5. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty.

6. As needed, provide peer review assessments specific to clinical practice of new physicians joining the Department of Emergency Medicine.

7. Must be able to work within an environment that treats a highly acute patient population.

II. Administration (20%)
Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site.

III. Research (3%)
Actively engage in clinical research and/or scholarly activities to enhance the academic
environment of the Department.

IV. Education/Teaching (2%)
A. Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in oncologic emergency medicine for fellows, residents and students who rotate through the Department of Emergency Medicine.
B. Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The Associate Professor must have completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school or equivalent, must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent, have made application and been accepted by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas. Must be board certified in Emergency Medicine.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience as Assistant Professor OR equivalent OR ten (10) years post clinical degree.
