Supervising Lifeguard
The City of Medford is hiring two full-time Supervising Lifeguards to help create a safe, welcoming, and high-performing aquatics environment at Rogue X. This is a great opportunity for an experienced aquatics professional who is ready to lead others, support staff development, and help deliver programs that make a meaningful difference in the community. Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; and
- Minimum of two seasons of lifeguarding experience in a formal recreation setting. A season is defined as at least 12 weeks of experience.
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible aquatics program and/or lifeguard experience, including lead worker, training, mentoring, or supervisory responsibilities.
- A bachelor's degree in recreation management, leisure services, education, business management, or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for one (1) year of aquatics program experience, but may not substitute for required leadership, or supervisory experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
- First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
- Swim lesson instruction experience
- Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification
- Aquatic Facility Operator/Certified Pool Operator (AFO/CPO)
Five 8-hour shifts per week, generally Monday - Friday, with rotating weekend shifts as scheduled.

The anticipated hiring range for the Supervising Lifeguard position is $32.26 (first step) to $33.87 or $35.57 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Essential Functions of the Position:
- Supervises staff, including assigning work, scheduling, providing guidance, employee development, hiring, disciplinary recommendations, etc.
- Responsible for conducting performance management reviews and evaluations of direct reports.
- Takes daily attendance of swim participants.
- Develops curriculum, supervises, and leads swim lessons for various ages and skill levels.
- Assigns instructors to teach lessons; keeps accurate progress records on swim participants and swim instructors.
- Administers the School to Pool program, and other programs as directed by the Aquatics Administrator or Recreation Manager.
- Supervises and participates in lifeguard deck coverage rotations as necessary for open swims, lap swim, aquatics rentals, and special events.
- Assists with scheduling staff and helps ensure accurate payroll data entry.
- Participate in department and division staff training and meetings and aquatic management team meetings.
- Enforces City policies, rules, and regulations as they pertain to aquatics management.
- Performs cleaning duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Follows the emergency action plan in the event of an emergency.
- Provides emergency care/treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
- Cautions and educates swimmers against dangerous situations.
- Ensures pool water chemical tests are being completed every hour.
- Assists patrons with putting on lifejackets.
- Makes entries into the aquatic opening and closing log.
- Completes designated job tasks, special projects, and all other duties as assigned to meet team, department, and City goals while working cooperatively, efficiently, and productively in a team environment.

- Demonstrates initiative to incorporate and implement learning principles from informal and formal training, as well as feedback from leaders and co-workers.
- Verify employee's work hours, leave usage, and overtime, and submits payroll information for timely processing.
- The scope of the assigned responsibilities may vary based on departmental structure and at the discretion of the Department Director or designee.
