About the Role

The Company is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join its legal team. The successful candidate will be a trusted advisor, providing practical and business-minded legal counsel on a wide range of issues relevant to a modern higher education institution. This includes but is not limited to, contracts and transactions, regulatory compliance, employment and labor matters, governance, and international programs and partnerships. The role involves drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various contracts, advising on regulatory and compliance matters, and supporting the University's international initiatives. The Assistant General Counsel will also be responsible for managing outside counsel, overseeing litigation, and ensuring that the University's policies and practices remain in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Applicants must have a Juris Doctor degree, be an active member in good standing of the State Bar of California, and have at least five years of legal experience, with a focus on higher education. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, employment law, governance, and international or cross-border matters. Exceptional drafting, negotiation, and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to manage a diverse and fast-paced workload independently. While not required, prior in-house experience in a college or university general counsel's office and familiarity with data privacy laws as they apply to higher education are preferred. The company is an equal-opportunity employer and is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
