Job Description

Position Summary

This position performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work on a diverse range of City vehicles and equipment, including diagnostic testing, system repairs, and preventive maintenance services.

Essential Job Duties

• Maintains and repairs City Police vehicles including, vans, pick-up trucks, SUV's sedans, motorcycles, boats and various support equipment
• Disassembles engines or motors and performs general repairs.
• Installs and adjusts brakes, batteries, tires, wiring, and glass; repairs differentials, carburetors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, programming modules, updating software, etc.
• Diagnoses and repairs the light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, components and systems, including fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, ignition systems, driveline systems, hydraulic systems, and HVAC systems.
• Performs minor fabrication and welding tasks.
• Assists other technicians with maintenance and repair tasks.
• Picks up and delivers vehicles and equipment as needed.
• Completes routine and complex tasks under moderate supervision.
• Additional duties as assigned.
• In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City's needs.
• May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or high school diploma with some additional continuing education through certification program
• 3 - 6 years of experience
• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Dealership experience preferred
• Valid South Carolina state issued driver's license
• Preferred qualification of manufacturer specific certification and/or ASE certification
• Possession of, or ability to obtain technician hand tools of type and quantities sufficient to perform with efficiency all required repair duties.

• Frequently lifts and moves items weighing up to 50 pounds
• Frequently bends, stoops, and crawls to access vehicle components
• Frequently stands and walks for extended periods
• Regularly uses hands to handle tools and equipment
• Regularly climbs in and out of vehicles
• Regularly works in cramped positions
• Regularly reaches overhead and at ground level
• Regularly operates vehicles and equipment

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in a shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and mechanical hazards. Work is performed in various weather conditions when conducting road tests or vehicle pick-up/delivery. In emergency situations, this position may be subject to extended shifts or alternative emergency schedules. May require evening, weekend, and holiday work as scheduled.

Emergency Classification B – Employees in this classification are required to remain on duty during the initial stages of an emergency. They are essentially the core group of employees in the field assessing damage and conducting initial response efforts.
